Celtic Challenge Round 3 – Preview

  • Bruce Perkins
  • 12 Jan 2024
  • Celtic Challenge

Points of Interest Head coaches are keeping twin motives in mind: to achieve the best results possible and to give all squad members their chance. There are a number of firsts: teams playing away (Gwalia); grounds being used (Parc y Scarlets and Scotstoun); and players, some of whom are well known at test level, Caity

Celtic voices were unanimous in welcoming the new Challenge as an important step forward. After the three derbies last week, they got down to the serious business of international contests. Edinburgh Rugby v Irish Wolfhounds The hosts started well on top with good combinations, but as they camped on the Irish line, they failed to

Wales follow Ireland, but not Scotland, in including a leavening of established test players. They have chosen by far the most significant of names for their two teams, delving deep into Welsh history. Brython pays homage to an ancient form of the Welsh language; Gwalia is an equally time-honoiured name for the nation. Their aim

Scotland’s two squads for the Celtic Challenge 2023-24

  • Celtic Challenge

The most refreshing thing about these lists is the absence of players based in England. This is the crucial step each of the Celtic nations must take. One name stands out: Emma Orr, already a highly promising test player at the age of 20, and likely to act as a beacon of hope to the

Ireland have announced the two squads to make up the Clovers (Connacht and Munster combined) and the Wolfhounds (Leinster and Ulster combined). Each is 30 strong. They contain so many familiar names from recent 6 Nations duels and the WXV that you might think the Irish authoities are taking the competition extremely seriously. They won

The Circus....as they like be known...forgive me...a hint of bitterness from Bruce.

Jennie Powell. 03 Feb 2026

While Bruce is perfectly able to respond to your comment, I’d just like to say that I think you misinterpret his words. He welcomes the high standards while at the same time wishing that other clubs also had the possibility to compete at that level.

Karl. 03 Feb 2026

Bruce, whilst complementary on Table position, forever seems a bit miffed that Hartpury & Gloucester-Hartpury thriving...& their set-up, their setting of standards.

Kalpna. 20 Jan 2026

What an inspiring lineup of Para Lioness stars, rising rugby talent, and future Olympians at the University of Bath truly motivating to see such dedication and support for student-athletes! I found this especially encouraging as someone exploring study opportunities abroad; I used https://www.studyinuk.com/to plan my own UK journey and it was super helpful.

Karl. 16 Dec 2025

Bruce always so strangely disgruntled with GH & EQP ...comparing GH with Ealing...ffs, where the GH Pathway just a natural Uni progression of mainly British Isles young talented Women compared to the signing of over seas stars...Suspect he'll be chearing that greatly anticipated first Women's British & Irish Lions?

Karl. 29 Nov 2025

Sorry Bruce, may not meet your London-love requirements.

Jennie Powell. 22 Nov 2025

Agreed

Peter Mannifield. 22 Nov 2025

Thanks for the above Jennie... Assuming -squad sizes of 30???, -Internationally capped players are remunerated by their respective unions, and -no limits on how many Red Roses, for instance, can be signed by 1 club.. I think the Cap will only have a very limited affect [and is so far below £ wise what the men get per head as to be embarrassing]

Jennie Powell. 22 Nov 2025

I found this on the England Rugby website whether it is effective or not is another matter: The Remuneration Cap 6. The Remuneration Cap for the 2024-25 Season is £220,000 and means the maximum total Gross Payments, subject to any Excluded Remuneration, made directly or indirectly by or on behalf of the Club or a Connected Party to Players during or in respect of the Remuneration Cap Year (and the term “Remuneration Cap” shall be construed accordingly). 7. Clubs must not exceed the Remuneration Cap and these Regulations shall apply to any Club that exceeds the Remuneration Cap. 8. When calculating what is included within the Remuneration Cap, the Club must apply the definition of Remuneration (as set out in Appendix 2) save that Excluded Remuneration (as set out in Appendix 3) is not included within a Club’s Remuneration for the purposes of the Remuneration Cap. 9. In respect of Excluded Remuneration, the Club must adhere to the respective provisions of the Remuneration Cap Regulations (set out in Appendix 3) and Premier Women’s Rugby Limited may in its absolute discretion require the Club to supply all such information, documents and assurances to evidence and justify why such Remuneration falls within the definition of Excluded Remuneration. If a Club fails to satisfy Premier Women’s Rugby Limited that such Remuneration is Excluded Remuneration, the value of the purported Excluded Remuneration (or a proportion thereof) as determined by Premier Women’s Rugby Limited will be included in the Remuneration Cap and any such decision will be final and binding upon the Club.
