DMP Sharks – Head Coach and Assistant Coaches Vacancies – Job Description and Information
DMP Sharks is the only Premiership women’s rugby team in the North and has been based out of Darlington Mowden Park for the last ten years.
The squad is made up of a dedicated player base from across the North; including players in the military, on university scholarship programmes and U20 & senior internationals.
The women’s Premiership runs from September to January, with a league cup competition February to April. Most games are played on Sundays, with training on Tuesdays and Thursdays at present.
With women’s rugby firmly on the agenda now, the RFU are looking to further support and promote the women’s Premiership competition and Sharks are looking for a coaching team to help lead the way in the North.
The successful candidate will be player focussed with the ability to work with a variety of key local partners. This would be an ideal role for someone wishing to work with a high standard of rugby player and looking to work closely with England coaches and the national governing body.
The Head Coach will lead the coaching team and will be appointed by and report directly to the DMP Sharks committee. This is an honorary role with appropriate expenses provided to include travel.
Qualifications
Applicants must have at least a UKCC Level 2 in coaching rugby, ideally level 3 or working towards Level 3. He or she must have experience in coaching a diverse team while working with/managing other coaches.
Roles & Responsibilities
To lead the coaching team responsible for the DMP Sharks squad including being Lead Coach of the 1st xv on match days.
To plan the coaching programme for the premiership campaign and cup competition
Alongside the team management this will include a thorough pre-season with matches.
To ensure that all sessions are focused and directed to offer an enjoyable experience as well as player development within a competitive environment.
To evaluate all coaching sessions and games with the coaching team and players.
To attend any coaching sessions and matches as required.
To mentor, where required, and advise assistant coaches and players where appropriate.
To have final say in team selection and be accountable to the Chair and DMP Sharks Committee.
To provide feedback to assistant coaches, players andcommittee where required.
To work alongside England coaches to support international player development
All coaches must be committed to furthering their coaching skills.
Skills & Qualities
Commitment and Enthusiasm
This position will require a considerable degree of commitment involving evenings and weekends for training and matches.
Planning
The Head Coach is directly responsible for planning the coaching programme for the Premiership campaign and Cup competition.
Leadership
The Head Coach sets an example and standards for the coaching team and squad. As such he/she will need to be able to inspire the coaching team and players to ensure that all involved maximize their potential.
Team Work
The Head Coach needs to be able to work effectively with the players, coaches, management and other volunteers within the club.
Delegation
The Head Coach needs to be able to delegate responsibility to the team manager and assistant coaches to ensure that their expertise is used effectively. This should include specific development opportunities to ensure succession planning for assistants to develop into future Head Coaches.
The Head Coach should have a sound understanding of the RFU Player Pathway and strong appreciation of managing player load where players are spread across representative squads and university/college academy programmes.
The Head Coach should work to further links with partner institutions – this will especially concern the management of training/playing load placed on university athletes during term time.
