Wakefield Trinity Ladies .. 4 (0)

Wakefield Trinity Ladies dropped a league position from 3rd after a convincing defeat by hosts Wigan St Patricks Ladies who leap frogged them in the league ladder. With one round left to play and sat firmly in 4th place the Ladies are still hopeful to make the playoffs but its now most probable that the play off semi final will be an away trip.

A depleted Ladies side made the trip over the Pennines missing several key personnel but made a real effort to contain their hosts who adapted to the terrible weather conditions better than Wakefield. Wigan raced into a 12 point lead with two converted tries but Trinity managed stem the flow for 20 minutes but were well pinned in their own half when in possession.

Torrential rain made it difficult for the game to flow with both sides unable to complete their sets but Wigan managed to add two more scores in quick succession to take a 22-0 lead into the break.

Having only one interchange took its toll on Trinity who battled hard in the second half but they could only suppress the hosts to 4 more scores in the second half. Wakefield’s never say die attitude continued throughout and they were rewarded for their resolve when Yasmin Copeland (lead photo) crossed for Trinity’s only score but satisfyingly to dirty the hosts clean sheet.

Wakefield have over a week to prepare for their final league fixture of the Championship campaign when they host undefeated table toppers Stanningley Ladies on Sunday 24th September, a win from that fixture will almost secure a top 4 finish and unless results go their way an away trip in the semi finals.

Wakefield are close to announcing a new head coach for the coming season after interviewing several prospective applicants last week.
