Jazz Carlin won two gold medals as swimmers from the British Swimming National Centre at the University of Bath impressed in the Canet, France leg of the Mare Nostrum Series over the weekend.
The European and Commonwealth champion, who moved to the Sports Training Village in the autumn, clocked 16:09.69 – the eighth-fastest time in the world this year – to win the 1,500m freestyle on Saturday. She then claimed victory in Sunday’s 400m freestyle race in 4:05.43, beating 2013 World silver-medallist Melani Costa of Spain into second place.
Chris Walker-Hebborn – also part of Dave McNulty’s training group at the University – was another British swimmer to finish the meeting with two medals. His time of 25.19 in the 50m backstroke was only bettered by home swimmer Camille Lacourt, then Walker-Hebborn clocked 54.49 to finish third in Sunday’s 100m backstroke final.
Siobhan-Marie O’Connor (pictured above) – who will act as official starter at the Team Bath Olympic Day Run on June 20 – won a 200m individual medley silver medal in 2:10.57 behind Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu.
And there was a bronze medal for University of Bath graduate Michael Jamieson in the 200m breaststroke, the Olympic silver-medalist touching the wall behind German duo Marco Koch and Christian Vom Lehn in 2:12.79.
The Mare Nostrum Series now moves to Barcelona on Wednesday and Thursday before concluding in Monaco over the weekend.
The Bath swimmers due to take part in the Barcelona meeting are Carlin, Walker-Hebborn, O’Connor, Jamieson, Andrew Willis, Calum Jarvis, Lizzie Simmonds, Jemma Lowe and Jay Lelliott.
The latter, a Sports Performance student supported by a Santander Sports Scholarship, has been named in the British squad for next month’s World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea.
