One of the unfulfilled dreams of women’s rugby

It wasn’t just the pandemic that put thoughts of a first-ever Women’s Lions tour on hold. It faces huge problems of sustainability. Where would they tour, who would come to watch in sufficient numbers to ensure financial well-being?

Let’s put aside this pointless questioning and select two teams. The choices for a Lions’ team are far harder than for the Barbarians. The Baa-baas’ watchwords are friendliness and open play, presenting all that is best in the game. The Lions represent the very best the British Isles can provide, and with a fair divide of national resources.

Our committee has decided on diplomacy, tact and fair play. So the first two Lions’ Fifteens consist of 4 Irish, 4 Scots, 4 Welsh and 3 English stars:
