Team Bath Tennis Academy ace Amelia Bissett has been selected to represent Great Britain in this year’s U14 Tennis Europe Winter Cup.
The 13-year-old from Devizes, who is coached by Eve Hughes and Craig Procter at the University of Bath Sports Training Village, will travel to Pecs, Hungary, from February 3-5 to compete in the qualifying group stages of the sport’s premier indoor junior team competition.
Great Britain will join the host nation and Denmark, Estonia, Georgia, Latvia, Netherlands and Spain in looking to finish in the top two and secure a place in the overall finals, being held in the Czech Republic from February 17-19. The teams of three will play both singles and doubles in each tie.
Bissett, who attends Ralph Allen School in Bath, will warm up for the Winter Cup by playing in two key European events for U14 players – this weekend’s Nike Junior International Teen Tennis tournament in Bolton and Le Petits As, the unofficial World Championships for the age group, in Tarbes, France, from January 23-29.
Fellow Team Bath players Matt Rutter and Tiana Fox, Bissett’s doubles partner, have also gained entry to the Teen Tennis competition, a Category 1 event which attracts the world’s best players aged 12-14.
Meanwhile, in the Team Bath senior ranks, Rio 2016 Olympian Marcus Daniell is starting his 2017 campaign at the ASB Classic back in his native New Zealand.
Daniell and Brazil’s Marcelo Demoliner will face multiple Grand Slam champion Leander Paes and his partner Andre Sa in the men’s doubles on Thursday, taking place on Centre Court at the ASB Tennis Centre in Auckland.
