After an incredible summer of international football, which saw England crowned European Champions at UEFA Women’s Euro 2022, domestic women’s football returns this weekend with the start of the 2022/23 season of The FA Women’s National League.
Earlier this year, The FA WNL launched a new strategy – Empowering For Success – to strengthen the league’s divisions. The strategy is backed by £3million of investment from the Premier League and aims to ensure the advancements in quality across the professional game are also harnessed throughout Tiers 3 and 4 of the women’s football pyramid.
With the new funding in place, the first round of fixtures for the 2022/23 season kick off on Sunday 21st August at 14:00 BST, under the #FAWNLBigKickOff banner.
After Newcastle United smashed the attendance record for a FA WNL fixture last season, with 22,134 people attending the club’s match against Alnwick Town at St James’ Park, several other fixtures across the divisions will be played at large stadiums this season:
- Lincoln City kick off the season against Doncaster Rovers Belles at Sincil Bank on Sunday 21st August
- Newcastle United take on Stockport County at Kingston Park, the home of Newcastle Falcons, on Sunday 28th August
- Peterborough United are heading to the West Homes Stadium to play Lincoln City on Wednesday 31st August
- AFC Wimbledon’s game against Actonians will take place at Plough Lane on Sunday 18th September
The FA Women’s National League is also home to two cup competitions – The FA WNL Cup and FA WNL Plate – which start on Sunday 11th September with the determining round, with the winners going into the cup and the losing team into the plate.
Carol West, Chair of The FA Women’s National League, commented: “Euro 2022 defied every expectation in terms of the attention it brought to the women’s game. Our job now is to ensure that this translates into further growth for domestic women’s football in England. With incredible football on display week in week out at affordable prices, we want to see as many fans as possible coming along to cheer on their local team across The FA WNL this season.”
With adult tickets across The FA WNL generally costing under £5, the league presents an affordable way of following a football team. Match day tickets and season tickets can be purchased via the clubs’ websites.
