It was a nail biting opener for the 2021-22 Premier 15s season here at Twyford Avenue, Wasps sadly just missing out on the win by 6 points against London rivals Saracens.
Wasps opened the game on fire and looked vicious with MacDonald sniping through and getting an early run away through the Saracens defence. But with Wasps turned over on the line the empty scoreboard was anyone’s to take.
In the 13th minute, it was Saracens who opened up the game, a scrum opportunity setting the platform for their first try from Hannah Casey.
Patience proved vital when, after fighting flawlessly on Saracens line, Wasps equalised with a try from Ellie Boatman. A conversion from Flo Williams putting them out in front.
A penalty opportunity saw Wasps extend their lead by three points with a kick from Williams in front of the posts. This took the half time score to 10-5.
A knock on from Wasps at the restart gives Saracens an early scrum and early opportunity to take the lead with a try from Clapp in the opening minute of the second half.
It wasn’t until the 60th minute that Saracens opened the gap on the scoreboard with an upfront try from May Campbell. However, Wasps were quick to retaliate, Abi Burton taking the ball over the line from Wasps line out. Edwards brought the home side within two points of the visitors with another conversion.
Another penalty kick from Wasps, Edwards, edged them into the lead and with just 10 minutes to go there was one point in it!
Saracens, in search of the win, found Wasps’ try line once more with another upfront forwards try, this time Packer taking it over.
It was a tense final few minutes as Wasps battled it out down to the last second but sadly the score was left at 20-26 and the visitors took the win.
A fantastic performance from both sides and solid foundation to build on from the black and gold crew.
