Holders Australia began their Vitality Netball World Cup campaign in scintillating fashion with a convincing 88-24 victory over Northern Ireland during today’s session 1.
The world’s top-ranked side – looking for a twelfth world cup crown – put their stamp on the tournament immediately, racing into a lead that they were never in danger of relinquishing.
Caitlin Bassett and Gretel Tippett were particularly impressive in the shooting circle as the Diamonds eased to victory by a margin likely to alert the rest of the tournament’s favourites, all of whom also play their first match today.
Earlier in the session, New Zealand recorded the first points of the tournament, getting their World Cup off and running with a 64-45 win over Malawi in the first match of the day.
Also off to winning starts during session 1 were Zimbabwe – who were backed by a vocal band of supporters inside the M&S Bank Arena – and Barbados, who defeated Sri Lanka and Singapore respectively.
Session 1 results:
New Zealand 64-45 Malawi (Group B)
Australia 88-24 Northern Ireland (Group A)
Barbados 69-34 Singapore (Group B)
