Women’s Cricket – Hard-fought Battles all-round

  • +1

Round 4 of the Royal London One-dayers saw four close finishes in Division One, with the batters having the better of the tussle.

In the lowest scoring contest of the day, the War of the Roses was won by the Yorkists, who were the only side to bowl the opposition out. No-one reached 50 in the match, but Katherine Brunt’s 48 not out saw the hosts home at Harrogate.

Notts just held on to defeat the winless Warwickshire in a palpitating finish despite Amy Jones’ 89 and Kathryn Bryce’s 59. That leaves their side anchored to the bottom of the table.

In the local derby at Brighton Surrey were indebted first to Priyanaz Chatterji who removed Sussex’s two leading batters, Georgia Adams and Danni Wyatt, at minimal cost, then, not for the first time, to a major innings by Nat Sciver of 80 not out.

Kent were mighty relieved to win through at Canterbury against Hampshire. The visitors posted a demanding total of 233-6 with major contributions from Maia Bouchier (64) and Suzie Bates (63). Kent made their usual strong start, Tammy Beaumont and Fran Wilson putting on 122 for the second wicket, but when both fell on the same total, the runs dried up. Hampshire’s second-line bowlers, Charlie Dean, Charlotte Taylor and Providence Cowdrill, kept things tight with three maidens and Fran Wilson’s wicket, and the target grew worryingly wide. Maxine Blythin dropped anchor, and with Laura Marsh bringing her experience to bear, they slowly reduced the leeway. Katie George took four late wickets but Blythin reached her maiden 50 to see Kent home.

They remain the only side to remain unbeaten.

The tight margins of this division mean that this narrow loss leaves Hampshire in the relegation zone with Warwickshire.
