Charlie Follett claimed the first international medal of her career with a superb silver at the Swiss Women International in Bern today.
The results continued Pentathlon GB’s remarkable recent success at the competition, making it our 7th medal in the last 5 years at the event. British teammates Georgia Pipes and Zoe Davison also performed remarkably well in the Swiss capital with Easingwold’s Davison finishing 4th and Stroud’s Davison 6th on her senior international debut.
Story of the day
The competition began with the 200m swim where the 3 British athletes got off to a strong start with Wycliffe College’s Davison setting the pace in 2:13.72. 20 year-old Pipes (2:19.69) and 19 year-old Follet (2:26.03) were also both inside the top 10 in the opening discipline.
The competition then moved onto the riding discipline where all 3 young Brits produced clear rounds to pick up the maximum 300 points and put themselves in contention for a strong finish in the Swiss capital.
The fencing ranking round continued their optimism with the trio all producing positive fences. Bristol’s Follett led the way, topping the discipline standings on 17 victories and 6 defeats, with former Yorkshire Pentathlon Club athlete Pipes securing 16 victories and Zoe 15. It meant that the 3 Pentathlon GB athletes started the laser-run in 1st, 2nd and 3rd with Davison heading Pipes and Follett.
The trio maintained their positions in the upper echelons of the leaderboard in the final discipline, TASS supported athlete Follet recording the 4th quickest laser-run of the day to claim the silver medal. In their least favourite discipline, both Pipes and Davison performed well, Georgia narrowly missing out on a medal in 4th with Davison 6th on her senior international debut.
It rounded off a fantastic day for Pentathlon GB athletes with Kate French securing the first World Cup victory of her career in Cairo. Jo Muir and Kerenza Bryson also impressed in the Egyptian capital, finishing 12th and 26th respectively.
