  • +1

It’s 2 Titles in the space of a week for Wigan-based school Orrell St James Primary, as they fought to win the LCB Year 5 Mixed Kwik Cricket County Final. This follows their success in winning the Year 6 Kwik Cricket County Final last week at Northern CC.

After winning their prospective District Kwik Cricket competitions, 16 schools from around the county descended on Blackpool Cricket Club for what turned out to be a perfect day for cricket.

The schools were also joined by Lancashire Thunder players Kate Cross and Ellie Threlkeld, who chatted to the teams, taking photos and showing off the new Thunder tribal logo. The young players also had fun testing out the new Thunder tattoo transfers, which will be available at their games later in the summer, including their game at Blackpool Cricket Club against Southern Vipers on Friday 5th August.

The 16 teams were divided into 4 groups, with each team playing against each other once. The winner of the group then went through to the Semi Finals. The semis saw St James the Less (Rossendale) v Orrell St James (Wigan) and St Pauls (Lancaster) v Bradley Primary (Pendle), who each won all three of their group games.

Orrell St James won the first semi with a score of 290-4 to St James the Less’s 226 -9. Bradley Primary were the victors in the second semi-final scoring an outstanding 303-1 with St Pauls scoring a valiant 269.

Bradley pupils, a little disheartened, were swiftly reminded of their achievements as runners up out of 300 schools and Orrell St James were magnanimous to the end, each offering cheers for the opposing teams at close of play.

“Kwik Cricket is a fun way for children of primary school age to experience cricket. Its emphasis is always on participation, enjoyment and fair play and it was pleasing to see that in abundance at the competition, particularly with the positive spirit shown by both finalists.

final“My thanks go to all the children that took part and more importantly to the teachers for their continued hard work and support in schools giving these girls the opportunities to play cricket. I would also like to thank Blackpool CC for hosting and making it a memorable day for everyone concerned.”
