Surbiton played Holcombe while Canterbury took on the University of Birmingham for a place in Sunday’s Finals in the Investec Hockey League Championships Semi Finals. This is what happened:
Surbiton 2 (1)
Giselle Ansley 11 (PC)
Olivia Chilton 51 (FG)
Holcombe 0 (0)
Surbiton continued their incredible unbeaten run and marched on to Sunday’s final with a controlled display against Holcombe. Goals from Giselle Ansley and Olivia Chilton handed them a 2-0 win and kept them on course for a third consecutive title.
Although Holcombe had the lion’s share of possession, Surbiton defended superbly, limiting the Kent side to half chances and one penalty corner. At the other end, Ansley’s precise penalty corner strike early on and Chilton’s unerring finish on the backhand did for the Kent outfit and set up a repeat of last year’s final with Canterbury.
Canterbury 6 (3)
Dirkie Chamberlain 18, 29, 40, (FG, FG, FG)
Jen Wilson 22 (PC)
Susannah Townsend 33 (FG)
Mel Clewlow 36 (PC)
University of Birmingham 0 (0)
Dirkie Chamberlain helped herself to a hat-trick as Canterbury ran riot to beat University of Birmingham 6-0, ensuring a repeat of the last two finals in the Investec Women’s Hockey League Championships. The South African striker’s trebled added to goals from Jen Wilson, Mel Clewlow, and Susannah Townsend to cap a miserable day for Phil Gooderham’s Birmingham side.
Although the match was 0-0 after the first quarter, a devastating second quarter from the Polo Farm Club gave them a 3-0 lead heading into half time. Chamberlain (2) and Wilson put the Students to the sword. There was no let up after the break and Chamberlain completed her hat-trick and then Townsend and Clewlow put the gloss on the scoreline with further goals. The dominant display gives Canterbury another date with Surbiton in the final.
