Notts defeated reigning champions Liverpool 1-0 to move within one point of second as the team head into the mid-season break.

Liverpool started the brightest as the lively Asisat Oshoala broke free down the right in the first two minutes, Carly Telford making a good save at her near post to deny the young Nigeria international.

On 14 minutes, Liverpool won a free kick 30 yards out, Fara Williams struck an ambitious effort, but Telford got both hands behind the ball and held on.

Jess Clarke and Ellen White both struck first time efforts over the bar from far out before Telford made another good save to deny Oshoala. The explosive striker had got inside Alex Greenwood but the England stopper got behind her shot and parried it for a corner.

Just before the half time whistle Alex Greenwood tried her luck with a free kick from 25 yards, but Libby Stout did well to hold on.

County started the brightest in the second half. Rachel Williams showed great desire to get the ball in the middle, sliding it out wide to Aileen Whelan, the striker drove into the box and struck a shot across goal which just missed White and went wide.

Just past the hour mark the Lady Pies took the lead following their best move of the match. Alex Greenwood beat two defenders on the left and swung the ball into White, Satara Murray just beating the striker to the ball and clearing for a corner. From the corner it was Greenwood again who provided the assist, an absolute pearler of a driven ball was powerfully headed home by Fern Whelan for her second goal of the season.

Liverpool tried to hit back, the dangerous Oshoala had a shot blocked by Laura Bassett, Telford coming out quickly to claim in front of Nicole Rolser.

As the Reds pushed forward, White looked to create a second. A neat piece of skill opened up space for the striker and her cross found substitute Dunia Susi but she could only loop her head wide.

The Merseyside team couldn’t find an equaliser and Notts run out winners, moving them to within one point of second place going into the mid-season break.
