After winning their respective District Kwik Cricket competitions to make it through to this County final, 7 schools from around the county arrived at Blackpool Cricket Club for a round-robin competition giving the opportunity for all schools to play each other once.

The schools were also joined by Lancashire Thunder player Nalisha Patel and coach Jen Barden, who chatted to the teams, taking photos and showing off the new Thunder tribal logo. The young players also had fun testing out the new Thunder tattoo transfers, which will be available at their Kia Super League fixtures later in the summer, including their game at Blackpool Cricket Club against Southern Vipers on Friday 5th August.

Women-Lancashire_Thunder_449283427There were some outstanding games with spectacular batting, bowling and fielding on show and after 42 games played Bolton Le Sands Primary and St James the Less Primary from Rossendale both finished on 10 points each at the top of the table. A quick check on scores and results saw Bolton Le Sands finishing above St James the Less on run rate, crowning them the first Year 4 Kwik Cricket County winners of Lancashire.

Vicky Krupinski of St James the Less Primary said: “I wanted to thank the Lancashire Cricket Board for organising a fantastic competition for my Year 5 (two days ago) and Year 4 children to participate in. The competitions on both days were so well organised and the standard of cricket played was outstanding. The parents and the children had a fantastic time on both days and I really hope we qualify again next year!”

finalDave Reddy, LCB’s Education Officer, added: “I’d like to thank all schools for participating in the first ever Year 4 Kwik Cricket competition and congratulations to Bolton Le Sands for winning it. This competition will, without doubt, grow in years to come as more schools and Districts participate in it at this year group.

“My thanks go to all the children that took part and more importantly to the teachers for their continued hard work and support in schools giving the boys and girls the opportunities to play cricket.

“I would also like to thank Blackpool CC for hosting and making it a memorable day for everyone concerned.”

After winning their prospective District Kwik Cricket competitions, 16 schools from around the county descended on Blackpool Cricket Club for what turned out to be a perfect day for cricket.

The schools were also joined by Lancashire Thunder players Kate Cross and Ellie Threlkeld, who chatted to the teams, taking photos and showing off the new Thunder tribal logo. The young players also had fun testing out the new Thunder tattoo transfers, which will be available at their games later in the summer, including their game at Blackpool Cricket Club against Southern Vipers on Friday 5th August.

The 16 teams were divided into 4 groups, with each team playing against each other once. The winner of the group then went through to the Semi Finals. The semis saw St James the Less (Rossendale) v Orrell St James (Wigan) and St Pauls (Lancaster) v Bradley Primary (Pendle), who each won all three of their group games.

Orrell St James won the first semi with a score of 290-4 to St James the Less’s 226 -9. Bradley Primary were the victors in the second semi-final scoring an outstanding 303-1 with St Pauls scoring a valiant 269.

Women-Lancashire_Thunder_449283427It was all set for the Final between the already crowned Year 6 Mixed Kwik Cricket Winners Orrell St James and Bradley Primary. Orrell put up a strong 287-1 to chase and Bradley were close to reaching it, save for some impeccable fielding by Orrell St James.

Bradley pupils, a little disheartened, were swiftly reminded of their achievements as runners up out of 300 schools and Orrell St James were magnanimous to the end, each offering cheers for the opposing teams at close of play.

“Kwik Cricket is a fun way for children of primary school age to experience cricket. Its emphasis is always on participation, enjoyment and fair play and it was pleasing to see that in abundance at the competition, particularly with the positive spirit shown by both finalists.

final“My thanks go to all the children that took part and more importantly to the teachers for their continued hard work and support in schools giving these girls the opportunities to play cricket. I would also like to thank Blackpool CC for hosting and making it a memorable day for everyone concerned.”

Congratulations to Orrell St James Primary from Wigan who took the title of 2016 LCB Year 6 Kwik Cricket County Competition on an action-packed Finals Day at Northern Cricket Club yesterday (07 July 2016).

finalOver 300 pupils from primary schools around the County participated on the day, after triumphing in their local borough competitions. 32 schools competed in the group stages, the winners of which then progressed to the Quarter Finals stage.

Both Orrell St James and runners up Casterton Primary from Burnley were strong throughout, winning all three of their group games, and sailing through the Quarter Finals.

Orrell St James were up against Wharton Primary from Salford in the Semi Finals, as they made a strong 254, but it wasn’t enough to combat St James’ 318. Casterton, whose girls’ team took the title on Tuesday’s Girls Kwik Cricket County Final, beat St Johns with St Mark Primary of Bury to reach the final. Orrell St James put on a good 297 for Casterton to chase, and after a shaky start, Casterton made the final overs very tense as they chased the lead, coming up only two runs short at 295.

It was a great day for all schools involved, and a bittersweet end to the day for Casterton, who were 2 runs short of clinching the ‘Double Title’ for 2016, after their girls triumphed in the Girls Kwik Cricket County Final earlier in the week.

Paul Hooton, Head Teacher of Ainsdale St Johns in Sefton, said: “I’d like to thank everyone for a wonderful finals day. The quality of cricket played by the pupils was excellent and in the right spirit. Thanks must go to the Lancashire Cricket Board for organising a superb day.”

Kirst Morgan, Head Teacher of Forefield Primary again in Sefton, echoed Mr Hooton’s comments and added: “A big thank you to the LCB and all the staff for a fantastic day. Our boys had a grand time and we really appreciate everything that goes on behind the scenes to make it happen.”

Bobby Denning, LCB Managing Director, commented: “It is absolutely amazing to see some great performances displayed today, and it is very promising for our future County Age Groups that we have a huge pool of talent coming through. It is now imperative that these young players are guided to join their local clubs and develop their game further.”

Congratulations go to Casterton Primary School from Burnley for winning the Girls Kwik Cricket County Final at Northern CC on Tuesday 05 July 2016. Casterton won all 6 of their matches to take the title defeating Gilded Hollins from Wigan in the final.

final22 schools from up and down the county descended on Northern CC in Liverpool representing their boroughs as winners of local competitions and qualifying for the county final. 220 girls competed in group matches with winners and runners up of each group going on to the quarter final stage. Casterton took their good form finishing top of their group by defeating Mayfield Primary from Oldham in the quarters.

The semis saw Casterton just edge Orrell St James from Wigan out and in the other semi Gilded Hollins had convincing win over Benjamin Hargreaves Primary from Hyndburn. The final saw Casterton scoring 281 to Gilded Hollins’s 246 to be crowned 2016 champions.

Mark Dutton, Casterton Primary, said: “I’m absolutely delighted for the girls winning the 2016 Girls Kwik Cricket County Final, this is an excellent achievement. We came through to the county final by winning a tough Burnley District competition against 20 other schools.

“At Casterton we’ve given the girls the same opportunities in cricket as the boys and have provided time and space for them in the school yard to play. Some of them go on to play at our after school mixed sessions and we also have good links with Burnley CC and Lowerhouse CC, where some of the girls continue to play and it’s great to see that a couple have been invited to county trials at Under 11 age group.”

Rudra Singh, Education Manager for the Lancashire Cricket Board, added: “Kwik Cricket is a fun way for children of primary school age to experience cricket. Its emphasis is always on participation, enjoyment and fair play and it was pleasing to see that in abundance at the competition.

“My thanks go to all the children that took part and more importantly to the teachers for their continued hard work and support in schools giving these girls the opportunities to play cricket. I would also like to thank Northern CC for hosting and making it a memorable day for everyone concerned.”
