Orrell St James Primary from Wigan Win Year 6 Kwik Cricket Final

  • +1

Congratulations to Orrell St James Primary from Wigan who took the title of 2016 LCB Year 6 Kwik Cricket County Competition on an action-packed Finals Day at Northern Cricket Club yesterday (07 July 2016).

finalOver 300 pupils from primary schools around the County participated on the day, after triumphing in their local borough competitions. 32 schools competed in the group stages, the winners of which then progressed to the Quarter Finals stage.

Both Orrell St James and runners up Casterton Primary from Burnley were strong throughout, winning all three of their group games, and sailing through the Quarter Finals.

Orrell St James were up against Wharton Primary from Salford in the Semi Finals, as they made a strong 254, but it wasn’t enough to combat St James’ 318. Casterton, whose girls’ team took the title on Tuesday’s Girls Kwik Cricket County Final, beat St Johns with St Mark Primary of Bury to reach the final. Orrell St James put on a good 297 for Casterton to chase, and after a shaky start, Casterton made the final overs very tense as they chased the lead, coming up only two runs short at 295.

It was a great day for all schools involved, and a bittersweet end to the day for Casterton, who were 2 runs short of clinching the ‘Double Title’ for 2016, after their girls triumphed in the Girls Kwik Cricket County Final earlier in the week.

Paul Hooton, Head Teacher of Ainsdale St Johns in Sefton, said: “I’d like to thank everyone for a wonderful finals day. The quality of cricket played by the pupils was excellent and in the right spirit. Thanks must go to the Lancashire Cricket Board for organising a superb day.”

Kirst Morgan, Head Teacher of Forefield Primary again in Sefton, echoed Mr Hooton’s comments and added: “A big thank you to the LCB and all the staff for a fantastic day. Our boys had a grand time and we really appreciate everything that goes on behind the scenes to make it happen.”

Bobby Denning, LCB Managing Director, commented: “It is absolutely amazing to see some great performances displayed today, and it is very promising for our future County Age Groups that we have a huge pool of talent coming through. It is now imperative that these young players are guided to join their local clubs and develop their game further.”
