On a calm, chilly Thursday night at Thurrock F.C. the BBC Essex County Cup final was sure to be an uphill battle for Writtle Ladies FC who currently sit two leagues below their opponents C&K Basildon Ladies.

This was emphasised a few minutes from kick-off as an early long ball forward from defence saw Karissa Rodney outpace the Writtle defenders and lift the ball over the advancing goalkeeper into the back of the net: 1-0. Shortly afterwards, Lily Mellors struck a beautifully weighted lob shot over the keepers head from 30 yards out: 2-0.
Writtle Ladies dug deep and were able to hold off the C&K Basildon advances, until the final few minutes of the first half when Mellors struck again, forcing a great save from the keeper who was unable to hold onto it – Mellors was quickest to react and slot home the rebound: 3-0.

The second half proved to be a much more of an even battle as Writtle Ladies seemed to find their confidence and create some chances on the C&K Basildon goal. C&K Basildon had numerous chances to extend their lead, but were unable to find the back of the net thanks to some superb saves from the Writtle Ladies goalkeeper. The final whistle saw C&K Basildon retain the cup for the second year running; having won it three times in the last four years!
FULL-TIME: C&K Basildon 3-0 Writtle Ladies
