Tammy Beaumont’s half-century laid the platform for England women to complete a warm-up double over New Zealand with a 20-run victory ahead of the ICC Women’s World Twenty20.
Having won a last-ball thriller by four wickets when the two sides met yesterday, England found the going tougher in this Chennai rematch as off-spinner Leigh Kasperek took 4-12 and Felicity Leydon-Davis grabbed 3-19 with her medium pace.
But despite being bowled out for 126 with four balls unused, Mark Robinson’s side had enough runs on the board as Jenny Gunn claimed 4-12 to help bowl out the White Ferns for 106.
With Sarah Taylor rested for the second of England’s three warm-up games, the onus was on the rest of the order to step up and Beaumont did just that with 56 from 52 balls at the top of the order.
However, she received little support as no other England player passed 12.
Amy Jones fell early after mistiming a pull, Heather Knight and Natalie Sciver departed cheaply and Georgia Elwiss skewed Leydon-Davis to point having just hit a six over midwicket.
Beaumont was run out attempting a quick single, and another mix-up accounted for Lydia Greenway, before Kasperek and Leydon-Davis made light work of the tail.
New Zealand made a positive start but Rachel Priest was bowled by Anya Shrubsole and Suzie Bates was caught by Katherine Brunt at cover attempting a third straight boundary off Gunn.
Amy Satterthwaite chopped a wide Danielle Hazell delivery to point, and although Sophie Devine and Sara McGlashan offered some resistance with a stand of 43, when they fell to Hazell and Knight respectively Gunn swiftly mopped up the lower-order.
The win was wrapped up in style, as Knight held a stunning catch at long-off to remove Morna Nielsen and maintain England’s momentum going into their final warm-up against South Africa.
