Speaking exclusively to She Kicks, Angelina Dixon outlines what her side must do to turn recent results into wins, discusses the thinking behind her move to the second tier and looks back at her spectacular debut goal in the dying minutes against Ipswich.
I Shocked Myself With Stunner Against Ipswich!
23 year-old Angelina Nixon announced her arrival in the Second Tier with a stunning ‘Goal of the Month’ in the closing minutes against Ipswich
Angelina Nixon: First time being in the Championship, I was a bit surprised and shocked myself – I didn’t know I had it in me. I was just thinking, ‘Might as well poke from there. No one’s shooting on this pitch, I’m going to come on and shoot,’ and then that’s what I’ve done. That’s probably the best goal I’ve ever scored – I can just put my hand on my heart and say that.
Move To Portsmouth Was A No-Brainer
After a solid career in the Women’s National League, Nixon felt her move to the WSL2 side from Rugby Borough only made sense;
Angelina Nixon: “I love the team. The community, togetherness, is why I score goals like that. I want to put everything into the team. It’s a no-brainer. I’m the sort of player who wants to get better and better, so I want to go to a better team, playing against better players. You’ve got to believe in yourself because if you don’t believe in yourself, who’s going to?”
We Need To Stick Together To Survive
After a string of defeats, Portsmouth sit at the foot of the WSL2, but Nixon believes that her team’s unity and faith holds the key;
Angelina Nixon: “We just have to keep that belief, believing in the future and believing that we’ve got the attacking threats. For me, it’s just being together and getting around your team-mates, lifting it up with love and care and togetherness. That’s how we’re going to win games, if we stick together. When we shoot, we score!”
I’m Unpredictable, That’s What I’m Best At
On what she thinks sets her apart from other players, Nixon says her ability to confuse her opponent is her strongest asset;
I’m very unpredictable. I always do the opposite of what they think I’m going to do, so then they don’t have a clue – if they think I’m going to go right, I’ll go left. That’s my model. Being unpredictable is probably what I’m best at!”
