Scotland v Fiji

  • +1

If you watched Scotland playing around a decade ago, you wouldn’t recognise the present product. It’s far from perfect, but marks a huge advance.

They have a pack that can look after itself and backs, led by Emma Orr and Francesca McGhie, who score the bulk of their tries.

Fiji weren’t there to make up the numbers. They played with zest and power. One weakness remains, discipline. The yellows mounted up; one, for Batila Tanake, upgraded to a red.

Inside two minutes Orr slid a long kick over the wet surface; McGhie chased and scored.

A neat blind-side move left Rhona Lloyd unmarked for a second helping.

Fijiana didn’t take this lying down. After a big break by Matarugu, Konaitai galloped to the line. Neutrals and Fijians in the crowd roared with delight.

By half-time the Scots were 17-5 up; not enough for comfort, and Fiji started the second half in charge. Only a knock–on prevented a second score.

At least Scotland achieved their first target, to reach the quarters. But at no stage did they run away with the game.

Outstanding handling by the white-shirts gave Railumu an excellent score. (17-10)

This is where the indiscipline told. Orr exploited a defensive clearance to put daylight between the sides.

Fiji came again; a thunderous drive gave Naisewaa a try on the other side of the field. Only an outstanding covering tackle by McGhie prevented Fiji from gaining a valuable bonus point.

The red card made Scotland’s job easier, but they weren’t in total charge even in the closing stages.

They’ll have a clearer understanding of their position when they meet Canada next week.
