Paris 2024 Day Two Preview

  • +1

With cycling and swimming at the forefront for Team GB on Day One, it’s expected to be more of the same on Day Two.

There are also medals to be won in judo, archery and canoe slalom, as GB look to build on their most successful opening day of the Olympics for 20 years.

Swimming

Adam Peaty is aiming to complete a hat-trick of gold medals in the 100m breaststroke, with the final taking place at 21:44 CET on Day Two.

The 29-year-old from Uttoxeter has three Olympic golds under his belt already, with 100m breaststroke wins in both Rio and Tokyo alongside a 4×100 mixed medley win in Tokyo.

He qualified second from the heats with a time of 59.18 and his semi-final takes place tonight.

Also in the evening session, there are medals to be won in the men’s 400m medley at 20:30, with Max Litchfield going in the heats at 11:15 and the women’s 100m butterfly at 20:40, with Keanna MacInnes qualifying 16th for tonight’s semi-finals.

Matt Richards and Duncan Scott will also be in the pool on Day Two, as the 200m freestyle heats take place at 11:00, followed by the semi-finals at 20:46.

Mountain Bike Cycling: Women’s Cross-Country

Following a road cycling medal for Anna Henderson, Team GB’s cyclists will next go for gold on the mountain.

Evie Richards and Ella Maclean-Howell will contest the women’s cross-country mountain bike from 14:10, with the action expected to be completed by 16:30.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Richards, 27, will want to improve on her seventh-place finish at Tokyo 2020.

Maclean-Howell is making her Olympic debut, but the 19-year-old has some pedigree behind her, making the U-23 World Cup podium in May.

Richards will go 13th at Elancourt Hill, while Maclean-Howell goes 31st.

Judo: -52kg

Chelsie Giles has the chance to earn Team GB’s first ever Olympic gold medal in judo when she competes in the -52kg class.

The Olympic bronze medallist from Tokyo has won world silver and European gold since then, so will be well in the fight for medals.

Giles will be 14th up on mat two in the morning session, which starts at 10:00. She will go straight into the last 16, with the morning session running until 14:00.

The evening session runs from 16:00 until 19:00 with all medals handed out in that session.

Canoe Slalom: Women’s K1

Team GB will be represented in the women’s K1 canoe slalom by Kimberley Woods, who finished 10th at Tokyo 2020.

Woods took to the water in today’s heats, and was one of the 22 qualifiers who will contest the semi-finals at 15:30.

The fastest 12 make the final, which takes place at 17:45 and is expected to wrap up by 19:00.

Archery: Women’s Team Finals

The first archery medals of the Olympics will be handed out on Sunday, with Team GB hoping to be right in the thick of it.

Megan Havers, Penny Healey and Bryony Pitman face Germany in the first elimination round at 10:39, after finishing 11th in the ranking round. The Germans ranked sixth.

Healey and Pitman have each been ranked world number one in the past year and are joined by Havers, 16.

The quarter-finals take place from 14:15, heading straight into semi-finals, a bronze medal match and the final, which is expected to be finished by 18:00.

Following an Olympic record performance on Day One, Team GB’s eventers will continue their push for gold on Day Two in the cross-country phase.

Elsewhere, Team GB’s women’s hockey campaign gets underway against Spain, Andy Murray will be in action alongside Dan Evans in the men’s doubles and the women’s rugby sevens kicks off, with Team GB facing Ireland at 15:30 and Australia at 19:30.
