It was a busy but highly-rewarding week of artistic swimming at the 2022 FINA World Aquatics Championships for University of Bath sporting scholars Kate Shortman and Danielle Lloyd.

Shortman, who studies International Management and Modern Languages and is supported by a Bill Whiteley Scholarship, competed in five finals across the week in Budapest.

She scored 85.1632 to finish seventh in the Tech Solo, her best-ever individual results on the Worlds stage, before teaming up with her Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games partner Izzy Thorpe for the duet events.

They qualified for their maiden World Championships final in the Tech Duet, ranking ninth overall with a score of 84.9751, and then set a personal best of 84.8667 to finish 11th in the Free Duet final.

“This is our third World Championships together and from the very first one, we wanted to make a final,” said Shortman. “Now we’ve done it, and it was amazing.”

Shortman and Thorpe were also part of the first full British team to compete at a World Championships since 2013, alongside Sports Performance student and Goldsmith Scholar Lloyd.

Britain produced a brilliant display in the Free Combination, their finals score of 84.6333 being an improvement by more than a point on their prelims swim and placing them sixth in the world. They were also ninth in the Tech Team with 82.5264, while Lloyd was part of the Free Team octet that scored 82.8000 to finish 12th.

Applications are now being taken from current and prospective University of Bath student-athletes for 2022-23 sporting scholarships. Visit teambath.com/scholarships to find out more.
