Allianz Premier 15s champions, Harlequins Women’s Head Coach, Gerard Mullen will leave his role within the Women’s team at the end of the 2021/22 season to take up a new position as Academy Backs and Attack coach.

Mullen joined Harlequins from Loughborough Students in August 2020. Following 2 successful seasons leading the Women’s team and overseeing their title win in May 2021, Mullen will continue his professional development working within the Academy coaching team, reporting to the Head of the Academy. The Academy is a strategic area of focus for the Club which aims to develop 3 out of 5 of its professional players through it.

Director of Rugby Performance Billy Millard said: “We take the growth and development of our coaches very seriously and the opportunity to move into this key Academy role is perfect for Gerard. He has demonstrated real talent and already delivered silverware in his time with us – we are delighted to support developing his skills and experience through this new role. At just 31 years old, he is established and well respected within the Club and we are all excited for his future. He leaves big boots to fill and we will commence recruitment shortly for our Women’s Head Coach for the 2022/23 season. This is a crucial appointment, and we are carefully assessing options from across the globe to find the right individual that fits with the Harlequins DNA as well as exceptional coaching skill”.

Mullen added: “I have massively enjoyed my time coaching this incredible team. All the players and staff have been amazing to work with and have shown me great respect and support since I took on the role. The girls bring so much energy and passion and I believe as a unit we have done great work over the last few seasons both on and off the pitch. I have every confidence the programme will continue to grow next season.

“It gives me great pride to see the progress that we have made in relation to the development of both the team and individual players, and I am honoured to have been a part of it. It has been a hugely difficult decision for me, but one that I feel is right for my coaching progression. I will still be a part of the amazing Quins family and the girls will always have my support.

“I have many happy memories and of course winning the Allianz Premier 15s title last year was incredible, however there is still plenty of time left in the current season. I am so motivated and energised to give my all to this group as we aim to retain the trophy. In the meantime, I am excited for this weekend as we face Bristol Bears in the Allianz Cup and then watching the TikTok Women’s Six Nations as many of our squad begin their campaigns for their respective nations.”
