A try for each of the Bristol front row helped the home side to a 47 – 5 victory over Richmond Women this afternoon on a poignant day for the club. A minute’s silence was observed at the start of the game, and across several other rugby clubs, in memory of Jen Lander – a player who was a huge part of Bristol Ladies who passed away earlier this week.
The passion and emotion of the day was evident from the home side right from kick off through to the half time whistle, as Bristol scored seven unanswered tries in the first 40 minutes.
Amy Wilson Hardy (sponsored by Massey Cladding Solutions) showed her pace and skills down the wing scoring a hat-trick of well worked tries, outrunning the Richmond defence on multiple occasions. Forwards Abbie Parsons (sponsored by Empica PR), Clara Nielson and Sarah Bern (sponsored by Fifth Consultancy) also crossed in the first half as Bristol showed their strength across the field. Sydney Gregson (Dambusters Rugby and EML Retail) added the seventh using her strength in the tackle to battle down the field and cross. Meg Jones converted one, taking the halftime score to 37 -0.
The second half continued in the same vein with Izzy Noel Smith and Marlie Packer crossing in the first 15 minutes, with Bristol continuing to push at every opportunity.
Things shifted slightly on 65 minutes, as Sarah Bern and then Daisy Travers were both shown yellow cards in quick succession, being penalised for infringements at the scrum and in defence. Richmond used the advantage in numbers to power over from a driving maul for their only score of the game, scored by Rowena Burnfield – however the Bristol defence worked hard to deny them any further momentum. Sarah Bern was back on the field for the final play of the game and showed her threat as she stormed down the wing looking for her second of the afternoon. She was sent into touch by a cover tackle from Richmond and the final whilst blew on 47 – 5, with Bristol securing the bonus point win and maintaining their spot at the top of the Premiership table for another week.
