Team Bath rising star handed wildcard for Wimbledon Juniors

Rising Team Bath MCTA Tennis star Eden Richardson has been handed a wildcard into the girls’ singles draw at Junior Wimbledon.

And she could be joined at SW19 by Megan Davies, who will be looking to build on some impressive recent results when she competes in the qualifying tournament on Thursday and Friday.

Richardson, a 17-year-old Ralph Allen School pupil, missed out on a singles place in the qualifying stages last year but did get to play at Wimbledon in the girls’ doubles.

She goes into next week’s prestigious tournament on the back of an excellent victory at the Nike Junior International in Nottingham. She also reached the last 16 in Roehampton this week.

Barry Scollo, Director of Tennis, said: “It’s brilliant news for Eden and really well deserved, she has been a great player for Team Bath.

“She moved from Liverpool with her mom to be part of the set-up here and has made a lot of sacrifices. She also works incredibly hard and we are looking forward to seeing what she can achieve next week.”

Davies, who attends Prior Park School and is hoping to make her Wimbledon debut this year, recorded one of the best results of her fledgling career this week as she beat World number 37 Lara Escauriza of Paraguay 6-2 7-5 in Roehampton before losing 6-4 6-4 in a hard-fought second-round match against Poland’s Iga Swiatek.

Meanwhile, Team Bath MCTA’s senior players have been handed tricky draws in the senior Wimbledon tournament as they prepare to start their doubles competitions.

Anna Smith and partner Jocelyn Rae have been drawn against Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, the number four seeds, in round one of the ladies’ doubles.

Marcus Daniell will start his men’s doubles campaign with Brian Baker against the number 13 seeds from Colombia, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah.
