Yeovil Town Ladies player Steph Williams is Jamie Sherwood’s first signing of the new year, which will contract her for the whole duration of the 2016 campaign.
Williams who was a regular on the team sheet throughout 2015, was known for her gritty and physical play, where she disrupted opponents and protected the back four, in a season which saw the Somerset club finish a credible fourth place in Women’s Super League Two.
However, Williams says that there is unfinished business, as she is determined to help her team achieve promotion to Women’s Super League One “We were really disappointed to finish where we did” said Williams. “We have unfinished business this season and I will be doing everything possible to get this amazing club into one of the top two promotion spots.”
Williams went on to say “This season is going to be different to last season. We know the majority of our squad well enough to gel quicker than last season. Last year the majority of players had never played together before, however this year we should have a head start to build on our successes.”
During the 2015 season, not only did Williams make 20 appearances for the club, but she also received her first senior international call-up into Jayne Ludlow’s Wales team.
Manager Jamie Sherwood commented and said “I’m really pleased to see Steph Willz commit to the club again for 2016. Her first season saw her settle immediately and become an integral part to what we put together last season.”
“Knowing Willz well after working with her previously, I know she will not rest until she consistently produces game changing performances week in week out. 2015 was her introduction to the FAWSL and I know 2016 will be the season that she will progress even more, until everyone knows what Willz is all about!”
Yeovil’s first competitive match of the season is on 7th February, where they are in 3rd round SSE FA Women’s Cup action. If successful in the 3rd round, they then play the 4th round on 28th February, before the FA Women’s Super League season commences in March, with fixtures to be released shortly.
