With two matches left to play in the 2015 Women’s Super League 2 season both Doncaster Rovers Belles and Reading FC Women staked their places in the first division for next season.
The Belles ran out 2-1 winners against the London Bees while Reading beat the struggling Golden Girls by 3-1. Yeovil Town Ladies who have set out their stall in their desire for promotion were unlucky to lose 1-0 to Oxford United and saw their dream crushed for this season. However the Lady Glovers have an impressive set up and I’m sure they will be even stronger next year.
With two fixtures left (3 for Reading) to play this is how the table looks:
Team | Pts | Games Played | Won | Draw | Lost | Goals For | Goals Against | Diff |
Doncaster Rovers Belles | 39 | 16 | 12 | 3 | 1 | 50 | 15 | 35 |
Reading | 36 | 15 | 11 | 3 | 1 | 52 | 13 | 39 |
Yeovil Town | 28 | 16 | 8 | 4 | 4 | 34 | 21 | 13 |
Everton | 25 | 15 | 6 | 7 | 2 | 31 | 18 | 13 |
Oxford United | 24 | 16 | 7 | 3 | 6 | 23 | 32 | -9 |
Aston Villa | 22 | 16 | 6 | 4 | 6 | 25 | 24 | 1 |
Durham | 17 | 16 | 5 | 2 | 9 | 20 | 31 | -11 |
Millwall Lionesses | 12 | 16 | 2 | 6 | 8 | 17 | 31 | -14 |
London Bees | 12 | 16 | 3 | 3 | 10 | 18 | 46 | -28 |
Watford Ladies | 4 | 16 | 1 | 1 | 14 | 12 | 51 | -39 |
Meanwhile in Women’s Superleague 1 the title will once again go down to the last game of the season, and Chelsea again have the title within reach. This season Manchester City are breathing down their neck and the Blues know that if they slip up in their last fixture against Sunderland they will virtually hand the trophy to their northern rivals. (You may remember they lost out on goal difference to Liverpool Ladies last season.)
The last round of fixtures will all take place at 6pm on Sunday. City face a potentially tricky tie against Notts County (both title contenders playing at home). Sadly Bristol Academy have been relegated, but as the Belles have shown it is possible to regroup and bounce back.
Departing Liverpool Manager, Matt Beard, said on the Women’s Football Show, that he believed he had taken Liverpool as far as he can and was downbeat on the chances of the rest of the league competing with the increased resources of Chelsea, Manchester City and Arsenal. His view was that those three will dominate the top of the table whilst everyone else scraps for middle or lower league positions. Let’s hope he is wrong and the league remains competitive and exciting.
Sunderland have been terrific in their first season in the WSL1 and were real contenders until the latter part of the season and hopefully Donny Belles and Reading will have a similar impact. However, after back to back league titles it must be disappointing for Beard to leave Liverpool second from bottom of the league and the incoming manager will certainly have an interesting task on his or her hands.
The league table currently is as follows:
Team | Pts | Games Played | Won | Drawn | Lost | Goals For | Goals Against | Diff |
Chelsea | 29 | 13 | 9 | 2 | 2 | 26 | 10 | 16 |
Manchester City | 27 | 13 | 8 | 3 | 2 | 23 | 10 | 13 |
Arsenal | 24 | 13 | 7 | 3 | 3 | 20 | 13 | 7 |
Sunderland | 20 | 13 | 6 | 2 | 5 | 24 | 20 | 4 |
Notts County | 15 | 13 | 4 | 3 | 6 | 19 | 18 | 1 |
Birmingham | 13 | 13 | 3 | 4 | 6 | 7 | 13 | -6 |
Liverpool | 13 | 13 | 4 | 1 | 8 | 13 | 20 | -7 |
Bristol Academy | 5 | 13 | 1 | 2 | 10 | 8 | 36 | -28 |
