Last gasp draw for the Glovers frustrates Sherwood

  • +1

Jamie Sherwood could not hide his frustration with Yeovil Town’s 2-2 home draw with Aston Villa, despite his side scoring a late equaliser to keep their FA WSL 2 promotion dreams alive.

The Villans twice took the lead before half-time, with Amy West and Alicia Robinson blasting home either side of Ellie Curson’s well-taken equaliser following a Helen Bleazard corner.

Yeovil stopper Charlotte Haynes was on top form to deny Hannah George and West from killing the game off, but with time running out it was Sarah Wiltshire who snatched a dramatic 87th-minute leveller, cutting back onto her right foot and curling a classy angled shot into the net.

And even though the Glovers could very easily have left with no points at all, manager Sherwood insists all they are after is victories as the FA Women’s Super League with BT Sport moves into the business end of the season.

“We know what we need to do to achieve what we want and a draw’s not going to help us at this point,” he said. “To be fair to the girls they never gave up, and they kept creating chances right throughout the entire game.”

“Every player that we have got within the team has got the quality to change a game – unfortunately we didn’t change it enough today. We kept on working, we kept on battling; we needed a take at least a point today to keep everything alive and we’ll keep fighting and we’ll keep the pressure on.”

“There was no complacency today, Villa played well. That’s maybe been Villa’s season this year – they’ve been a bit of a ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ side, but they came here with a good game plan and they executed it well.”

Yeovil now slip six points back from Reading who sit second in WSL2 with just five league games remaining this term, and Aston Villa remain comfortably in mid-table.

But Villans boss Joe Hunt was adamant his side should have claimed all three points in the contest after squandering several chances to put the game to bed.

He said: “I thought we should have won the game comfortably; we were head and shoulders the better team. We played some good exciting football, we had chances in each half and I thought we should have scored before they got the equaliser.”

“We said at half-time that the next goal was going to be the big one; if they get it their tails go up and if we get it we kill the game. We know that we should be higher in the table. I thought today was one of our better performances and we showed what a good team we are.”
