Belles keep the pressure on Reading

  • +1

Jade Lorton-Radburn enjoyed a debut to remember as the Belles picked up where they left off as the WSL2 season restarted with a 5-0 win over Watford.

Lorton-Radburn powered home a header and the Belles’ second of the evening to give Glen Harris’ side their eighth win of the season.

A Sue Smith free kick opened proceedings early on and a Courtney Sweetman-Kirk double alongside a second half Bethany England effort gave Glen Harris’ side a relatively easy three points.

The Belles were dominant throughout and took the lead after only four minutes. A free-kick awarded just outside the area for hand ball was expertly placed into the top corner by Smith for her sixth goal of the season.

England then volleyed wide and Rhiannon Roberts headed over from a corner before Lorton-Rayburn made it two.

Brilliant work on the right allowed Sophie Barker to deliver a fizzing cross which the debutant attacked and powered into the top corner as the Belles took control.

It was three on 25 minutes after a mix up in the Watford backline. Shayla Burgess spilled a cross at the feet of Sweetman-Kirk who had the simple task of poking the ball home to make it 3-0.

Just after half an hour the rout continued with Sweetman-Kirk adding her ninth of the season, smashing home from a tight angle leaving Burgess with no chance in the Watford goal.

It was 40 minutes before Watford had an effort at goal, Emily Heaslip firing a free kick well over from 30-yards.

After the break, the Belles were still gunning for more with Kasia Lipka and England with long range strikes missing the target but it wouldn’t be long before England got in on the act.

Lipka played a sublime pass into England’s feet on the corner of the box before rifling the ball into the top far corner of the goal to make it five.

The home side continued to push forward but Watford’s defence were more solid in the second half and held the Belles at arms length.

Player of the match Sweetman-Kirk was inches from grabbing a hat trick, thundering a strike off the bar but despite her and the team’s best efforts, no more goals were to come.

It leaves the side joint top of WSL2 alongside Reading with a trip to Oxford to come next week and the chance to continue the push for promotion.
