It has been a successful start to Wimbledon for Team Bath MCTA Tennis players Anna Smith, Jocelyn Rae and Marcus Daniell, with all three progressing to the second round of the doubles competitions.
Smith and Rae made light work of Slovakian Jana Cepelova and Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland, needing just 49 minutes to wrap up a 6-2 6-1 victory on Wednesday.
That set up a tough encounter against number three seeds Lucie Safarova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands, who have already won the ladies’ doubles titles at the Australian and French Opens this year.
New Zealander Daniell – also coached by Dave Sammel at the University of Bath – and Brazilian partner Marcelo Demoliner enjoyed a 6-3 7-6 6-1 win over Robin Haase and Benoit Paire.
It was Daniell’s first win at a Grand Slam tournament and set up a second-round match against Spain’s Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Malek Jaziri of Tunisia.
