Women’s Three Nations Championships
Following the superb England Boxing National Finals earlier in May, many of the men and women Champions and runners up were in action to secure the GB title in the Three Nations Championships.
Seven weight categories were contested in the female competition but some of England’s top athletes were noticeable in their absence, namely Nicola Adams, Lisa Whiteside, Chantelle Cameron, Sandy Ryan, Stacey Copeland and Savannah Marshall. Many of them were preparing for a pre European Games tournament in Spain and others were nursing injuries after the tough England Finals.
There was plenty of action though with Wales proving they are a force to be reckoned with in the ring. Stalwart Light Flyweight Lynsey Holdaway (Wales) showed she is still on form and was crowned GB Champion with two unanimous points wins.
Commonwealth Games quarter finalist Charlene Jones (Wales) and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist (Lauren Price) also secured convincing points wins to each take the GB title.
England boxers Kim Shannon (51kg), Cherelle Brown (64kg) and Natasha Gale (75kg) all claimed the GB title for the home nation.
Scotland’s only champion, Stephanie Kemachan (54kg), saw a close points decision over England’s Rachel Bower.
A good display of boxing from women from all three nations makes for an interesting selection conundrum for GB boxing, which currently doesn’t have any representatives from Wales – why you might ask with such emerging Welsh talent.
