‘Spirit’ beat ‘Invincibles’ in a low-scoring match in which Spirit won convincingly with bat-and-ball before a crowd of 15,800 spectators. Between innings, Michael Atherton interviewed Sarah Glenn pitch-side. Sarah Glenn told TV cameras that Spirit had ‘held their nerve’ and lauded Danni Gibson ‘Gibbo’ and Charlie Dean ‘Deano’ for their exceptional fielding skills. Two first-time finalists (Heather Knight’s ‘Spirit’ versus Tammy Beaumont’s ‘Fire’) will compete at Lords to win the Women’s Hundred trophy. Player-of-the-match was Georgia Redmayne (Australia) who struck a match-winning ’four’ to chalk-up her undefeated ‘fifty’ [51 runs (from 47 balls). Trent Rockets vs Oval Invincibles  at  Nottingham (Trent Bridge) on 14 August 2024;

Spectators witnessed ‘great drama’  in which a ‘dog fight’ was said by the winning skipper to decide which team played the Eliminator, with Fire lying-in-wait for the tournament’s final. Batting first on a ‘dry pitch’ with ‘plenty of turn on offer’ and ‘quick outfield,’ and Rockets’ wickets fell at regular intervals – with one ‘catch-of-the-tournament’ by Ryana MacDonald-Gay. Only two Rockets batters posted double-figures (Ash Gardner & Nat Wraith.) Marizanne Kapp (pictured) took three wickets, hit Invincibles’ top-score [26*undefeated (from 24 balls).] Marizanne Kapp also scored the winning runs: ‘four’ said to be ‘placed perfectly’ between ‘deep-mid-wicket’ and ‘long-off;’ immediately followed by the winning ‘two.’  Receiving  POTM ‘Meerkat match hero cap-and-medal, Marizanne Kapp said the situation was both ‘stressful and familiar,’ having encountered similar scenarios playing cricket around-the-world for the last fifteen years. Commentators added that half of all balls bowled by Invincibles were in sets-of-ten, that set a ‘new record’ for the number of sets-of-ten balls bowled in an innings during a Women’s Hundred match. That resulted in a low-score with the required-run-rate for both teams on par (around one run-per-ball.) Invincibles advance to play the Eliminator in a London-derby (versus Spirit); whereas Rockets season was ended. With a golden ticket to play the final, Welsh Fire find their own situation is a reversal of last year when they were last-placed ‘spoonists.’  Introduced for SKY Sports by Natalie Germanos (broadcaster & actress from Rep. South Africa TV); with Charles Dagnall (broadcaster & former county player), Eoin Morgan CBE (broadcaster & former England international), Nasser Hussain OBE (broadcaster & former England international)  Lydia Greenway OBE (broadcaster & former England international), Mark Butcher (former England international.) Also with guest commentators Katherine Sciver-Brunt OBE and Kate Cross (England International) and Stuart Broad CBE (former England International.)

*Rockets’ innings: skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, with international players: Ashleigh ‘Ash’ Gardner, Heather Graham & Alana King (all Australia); *[Lauren Winfield-Hill keeping wicket for Invincibles]; *Grace Scrivens was bowled by Marizanne Kapp’s delivery that skidded and ‘kept low,’ for a fifth-ball duck; *Two balls later Bryony Smith was caught by Mady Villiers’s exceptional ‘goalkeeper’ dive ‘with good landing’, from Marizanne Kapp’s bowling;  *’Massive blow’ when Nat Sciver-Brunt missed a ‘full shot,’ and was bowled by Rachel Slater, ‘middle-and-off for a fourth-ball duck;’ *After 25 balls ‘power-play’ 15/3; *Nat Wraith played across-the-line, with leg-stump flattened by Marizanne Kapp ‘without celebration;’ *Strategic-time-out was called at mid-way (50 balls) on 56/4; *Stand-out batter Ash Gardner was caught-and-bowled by Mady Villiers; *Heather Graham played across-the-line, bowled by Rachel Slater; *Katie George ‘miscued’ to backward-point,’ caught by diving Ryana MacDonald-Gay, from  Sophia Smale; *Josie Groves was caught-and-bowled ‘from Botton edge,’ by Sophia Smale  for a third-ball duck; *Rockets’ batting: Ashleigh ‘Ash’ Gardner 43(26), Nat Wraith 14(14); *Invincibles’ bowling: Marizanne Kapp 3/8, Rachel Slater 2/15, Sophia Smale 2/17, Mady Villiers 1/17;

*Invincibles’ innings: *skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill, with international players Chamari Athapathatu (Sri Lanka); Amanda-Jade Wellington (Australia); Also Marizanne Kapp (Rep. South Africa); [Nat Wraith keeping wicket for Rockets]; *Chamari Athapathatu was caught at ‘long-off by Heather Graham from Ash Gardner. *After 25 balls ‘power-play’ 25/1 (vs 15/0); Drama struck when Alice Capsey was given ‘out,’ as ‘leg-before’ on pitch, but came back anticipating the technology (ultra-edge) would prove otherwise. Umpire’s decision was reversed and ‘good-sports-person-ship’ won the day; Lauren Winfield-Hill went ‘leg-before’ to Heather Graham; *Next ball, Alice Capsey departed when bowled by Alana King’s ’Shane Warne’ ball; *At mid-way (50 balls) 45/3 (vs 56/4) with par spike rate to win (47 runs were needed from 50 balls); Invincibles’ match-winning partnership between Marizanne Kapp and Paige Scholfield added 51 runs. *Paige Scholfield was caught aerial at ‘mid-wicket’ by Alexa Stonehouse from Kirstie Gordon; *Five balls later, Mady Villiers was stumped by Nat Wraith from Ash Gardner; *As mentioned above, Marizanne Kapp scored ‘four’ followed by the the winning ‘two;’ *Invincibles’ batting: Marizanne Kapp 26*not out(24), Paige Scholfield 26(24)  Chamari Athapathatu 16(17), Alice Capsey 10(14);  *Rockets bowling: Ashleigh ‘Ash’ Gardner 2/23, Kirstie Gordon 1/9; Heather Graham 1/17, Alana King 1/19;

Match result: Oval Invincibles 92/5 (1.0 run-per-ball, target 92 from 94/100) beat Trent Rockets 91/8 (0.9 runs-per-ball, from 100/100) by five wickets and with six balls remaining

Oval Invincibles vs Southern Brave at the Kia Oval (London South) on 8 August 2024

Upon arrival, flags were seen lowered to half-mast, out of respect for the tragic passing of former England player Graham Thorpe MBE, who ‘spent 17 years playing for Surrey’ and earned 100 Test caps for England as a brilliant middle-order batter – please see footnote below. ’Leading the charge’ at the southern derby, top-scorer Danni Wyatt (pictured) [46*not out runs (from 37 balls)] hit the winning ‘six’ and was awarded POTM ‘Meerkat match hero’ cap-and-medal by Dinesh Karthik. Batting first, Invincibles ‘never really got going,’ their innings interrupted twice by rain stoppages. Targets were revised (twice) because of shortened innings, using the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method. *Danni Wyatt made an uncharacteristically cautious start to Brave’s run-chase, partnered for the first half by Maia Bouchier. A second partnership between Danni Wyatt and Chloe Tryon took Brave across-the-line for their first win of the season, albeit finding themselves as defending champions knocked-out of this year’s competition. Post-match, Brave skipper Georgia Adams told commentators she expected to ‘come back stronger,’ for next year’s competition. By comparison, Invincibles ‘have a job on their hands’ to qualify for the next stage.

Introduced for SKY Sports by Nasser Hussain OBE (broadcaster & former England international) with Dinesh Karthik (former India international.) During the rain delay, Ebony Rainford Brent MBE (broadcaster & former England international – director Women’s cricket at Surrey and Chair of Surrey’s ACE Programme) was featured in a pre-recorded presentation that raised awareness of Surrey’s ‘African Caribbean Engagement Programme’ (ACE Programme.) Charity’s three-year’ Blaze Her Trail’ initiative that seeks to: identify, recruit and develop female athletic talent from African and Caribbean backgrounds, with the ultimate goal of producing professional cricketers who can bowl exceptionally fast (75mph +) with the potential to represent Team GB at the Olympics 2028 @url https://aceprogramme.com/blaze-her-trail/Weather: grey cloud cover with intermittent rain. 18C.

*Invincibles’ innings: *skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill, with international players Chamari Athapathatu (Sri Lanka); Amanda-Jade Wellington (Australia); Also Marizanne Kapp (Rep. South Africa); [Georgia Redmayne keeping wicket for Spirit]; *Chamari Athapathatu was caught by keeper Rhianna Southby, from Lauren Cheatle for a third-ball duck; *Alice Capsey was caught by Freya Kemp from Lauren Cheatle; *Rain delay on 38/2 (after 35 balls) lasted for 40 minutes from which point floodlights were switched-on; *When play resumed, match was reduced to 65 balls per side with a revised target of 85; *Commentators’ curse struck immediately after the break when ‘sought-after player’ Lauren Winfield-Hill who ‘never really got going’ was caught by Danni Wyatt, from Tilly Corteen-Coleman; *After 25 balls ‘power-play’ 29/0; *At mid-way (50 balls) 70/3 (vs 47/5); *Paige Scholfield was caught by Chloe Tryon from Tilly Corteen-Coleman; Amanda-Jade Wellington was not out; *Invincibles’ batting: Marizanne Kapp 26(17), Alice Capsey 19(12), Lauren Winfield-Hill 17(23); *Brave’s bowling: Lauren Cheatle 2/6, Tilly Corteen-Coleman 2/19;

*Brave’s innings: *skipper Georgia Adams with international players Lauren Cheatle (Australia), Also with Chloe Tryon (Rep. South Africa) & Smriti Mandhana (India) replacing Charli Knott (Aus); *[Lauren Winfield-Hill keeping wicket for Brave]; *Smriti Mandhana was ‘run-out’ by Lauren Winfield-Hill receiving at the striker’s end from Chamari Athapathatu *Maia Bouchier was bowled by Ryana MacDonald-Gay; *After 25 balls ‘power-play’ 13/2 (vs 29/0); *Freya Kemp was caught by Alice Capsey from Sophia Smale; *Strategic-time-out was called on 59/3; As mentioned above, Danni Wyatt carried her bat, scoring 2 ‘sixes’ and 3 ‘fours’ and hit the winning ’six;’ *Brave’s batting: *Danni Wyatt 46*not out (37); Maia Bouchier 16(11); *Invincibles’ bowling: Ryana MacDonald-Gay 1/7, Sophia Smale 1/16;

Strangely by coincidence, the same three Spirit batters reached double-figures (Deepti Sharma, Cordelia Griffith and Eva Gray) as batters struggled against Invincibles’ world-class bowling attack (that included Marizanne Kapp and the competition’s leading wicket-taker Amanda-Jade Wellington.) By comparison, unlike before, the pitch was expected to play to batter’s rather than bowler’s advantage. Receiving POTM ‘Meerkat match hero’ cap-and-medal from Stuart Broad, Lauren Winfield-Hill (pictured) said that she was ‘determined’ to put-in a ‘good performance,’ making top-score [61*not out runs (from 40 balls).] Chalking-up her first skipper’s ‘fifty’ this season, Lauren Winfield-Hill also scored the winning ‘single’ and carried her bat. Invincibles comfortable win sends them top-of-table, second only to Welsh Fire on equal points but with slightly lower net-run-rate with three rounds remaining. Separately, 7th-placed Manchester Originals find themselves eliminated from the battle for qualification beyond the group stage, as the consequence of this result. Commentators for SKY Sports were Lydia Greenway OBE (broadcaster & former England international), Charles Dagnall (broadcaster & former county player), Alex Tudor (former England International) with guest commentator Stuart Broad CBE (former England International). Before the match, Ebony Rainford Brent MBE (Commentator, Director of Surrey & Chair of Surrey’s ‘African Caribbean Engagement Programme’ ACE Programme), interviewed Charlie Dean and Sarah Glenn (both Spirit players & England Internationals.) Weather: hot, mainly with clear blue sky, 25C

London Spirit vs Oval Invincibles at Lord’s (London, St John’s Wood) on 4 August 2024
