University of St Andrews new hockey pitch certified by FIH

The new dry turf hockey and multisport pitch at the University of St Andrews has been certified by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) – the requirement to hold National League hockey matches.

Opened in October 2024, Saints Sport’s new pitch features Polytan’s Poligras Paris GT Zero surface – a dry turf pitch developed for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and the world’s first carbon-zero ISCC-certified hockey pitch.

With pioneering technology to help increased ball roll and speed across the surface, the new pitch meets the requirements of an FIH-approved Innovation Category Dry (non-irrigated) Turf and fulfils the criteria for FIH Category 3 hockey field certification – the requirement for National League hockey matches.

The surface offers the ability to cater for club and National league level matches when dry, but with a little dew or rain – as found with the UK’s temperate climate – the facility is elevated to an Olympic-standard surface without the need for standard irrigation.

The new synthetic turf pitch has the added benefit of being suitable for multisport use, catering for a wide range of activities including club training, recreational leagues, Junior Saints weekly classes, and holiday camps.

Jamie Carnegie, Director of Hockey said: “The quality of surface and overall change in facilities will allow the Hockey Club to improve considerably, increasing the standard of hockey that we will be able to play at the University and future proofing the club.

“With the hockey pitch used throughout the year, the new surface will also improve the coaching experience for participants on our hugely successful community junior hockey programme, and for those attending our residential hockey camps during the summer. Given the quality of the new surface and investment in the surrounding infrastructure we are hopeful of being able to host Junior National squads for training and competitions in the future.”

Jennifer Griffin, Director of Hockey Operations for Scottish Hockey, said: “As we strive for a more sustainable future in our sport and positively contribute to Scotland’s plans to reach net zero by 2045, it is fantastic to see the University commit to resurfacing the field with the new environmentally friendly carpet.

“The field will not only provide an elite playing experience when dry in comparison to traditional wet fields but continue the legacy of hockey being delivered at the University, contributing to improved mental health and wellbeing of the students and surrounding community.”
