Southern Vipers vs South East Stars at Derby on 22 June 2024 at 11h30

Double-defending champions were defeated by Stars in a dramatic rematch earned three days ago, when Vipers clangorous home crowd of 3000 schoolchildren saw their favourite team beat Stars by 113 runs at Hove. By contrast, this semi-final played between second-and-third placed teams was well-matched with guest Australians playing on either side. Batting first, Stars skipper Bryony Smith made a quick-fire 16, followed by a ‘solid’ partnership between Sophia Dunkley [49 runs (from 34 balls)] and Georgia Redmayne 39(38) that added 74 runs. Paige Scholfield 34*not out(22) played an undefeated cameo. commentators felt Vipers batters were in ‘all sorts of trouble’ as their innings was held together by Danni Wyatt’s opening cameo 34(17); with spirited resistance from top-scorer Charlie Dean 43(29.) Commentators lauded Tilly Corteen-Coleman (England u19s) who ‘had bowled quite beautifully’ not only to bowl Maia Bouchier ‘behind her legs,’ but also collect Georgia Adams’ wicket when stumped by guest keeper Georgia Redmayne. Match reached its climax during Tash Farrant’s ‘superb’ final over, that included two ‘run-outs.’ Finally the match was decided by Vipers failing to score ‘six’ from the final ball. Finals day commentators were Charles Dagnall (Broadcaster), Michael McCann (Sports journalist), Jo Gardner (Sunrisers), Sophie Luff (Western Storm) & Fi Morris (Lancashire Thunder.) Weather was sunny 17C.
