Charlotte Edwards Cup 2024 – match 25 – Diamonds vs The Blaze

  • +1

Northern Diamonds vs The Blaze at Leeds, Headingley Stadium on 9 June 2024 (double-header) rain-delayed start 15h45

Following their previous first victory, Diamonds commentators were disappointed to see the hosts face such a ‘narrow defeat,’ by Blaze. Blaze’s international pairing of Tammy Beaumont (England) [45 runs (from 33 balls)]; and Kathryn Bryce (Scotland) [54 runs (from 39 balls)] combined, scored 99 runs from 72 balls. Once breakthrough came and wickets started to fall, commentators doubted whether Blaze would ‘see out’ their 20 overs. Turning to Diamonds’ reply, after Bess Heath (England) [59 runs (from 32 balls)] and Sterre Kalis (NL) [41 runs (from 32 balls)] replied with 100 runs from 64 balls. Commentators commended their team’s ‘resolve’ to make a ‘valiant effort’ to ‘claw their way’ back into the match; adding that Diamonds ‘came-up short’ (of their target) ‘with a narrow defeat’ by Blaze. Separately, Blaze’s seventh consecutive win was said to guarantee their place on finals day. Commentators for BBC radio Leeds: Jonathan Doidge (referred to endearingly as ‘Doidgy’), Graham Hardcastle (Sports journalist); with guest Dr Jane Powell (President, Yorks CCC; former England & Yorks women.)
