Northern Diamonds vs The Blaze on 6 May 2023 – Chester-le-Street, Durham (SEAT Unique Riverside) – Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

When top-of-table Blaze played defending champions Diamonds, the match lasted less than 19 overs-per-side. Blaze suffered an immediate set-back, when South African Inbternational Nadine deKlerk’s first ball struck a helmet (law 28.3); gifting 5 extras. Diamonds innings *Skipper Bess Heath, with Lauren Winfield-Hill keeping wicket without wearing conventional keeper’s pads. *Internationals Chloe Tryon (Republic of South Africa), Sterre Kalis (NL) and Katherine Fraser (Scotland u-19 skipper.) *Astoundingly, a procession of Diamonds batters departed for single-figures. *Diamonds made 20 without loss. *Lauren Winfield-Hill (7 runs (from 11 balls) found a ‘thick-edge,’ caught by to Kathryn Bryce in the ‘covers,’ from Nadine deKlerk. *Hollie Armitage (8) edged an ‘in-swinger,’ caught behind by Sarah Bryce, for Nadine deKlerk’s second wicket. *Third wicket fell when innings-anchor Sterre Kalis (6) went ‘leg before,’ playing-across-the line to Grace Ballinger. *During the Power-play, Blaze used just two bowlers. *After ten overs Diamonds were 42/3. *Beyond the Power-play, a procession of seven remaining wickets fell, departing batters adding just 20 runs from nine overs. *During the 11th over, Phoebe Turner (8) went ‘leg before,’ to a sharp in-swinger, gifting Nadine deKlerk’s (3/25) third wicket. *Fellow South African Chloe Tryon (0) made a ‘golden duck’ departure from a ‘thin-edge,’ caught behind by Sarah Bryce, Nadine deKlerk’s fourth wicket (4/25.) *Scotland’s Katherine Fraser (4) lost both bales to Grace Ballinger. *Stand-in skipper Bess Heath scored ‘four’ to chalk-up Diamonds ‘fifty’. *Next ball, skipper Heath thick-edged to England’s Tammy Beaumont diving at ‘gulley’, handing Nadine deKlerk her fifth wicket (5/30.) *Next ‘over’ saw Abi Glen’s(2) bales sent flying by Grace Ballinger, without troubling the scorers. *Another change-of-over marked Nadine deKlerk’s sixth wicket (6/30) when Katie Levick was caught from a thick outside- edge by Sarah Glenn at ’short third.’ *Finally, Lizzy Scott edged to keeper Sarah Bryce, to complete Nadine deKlerk’s personal best 7-fer (7/33.) *Ten ’extras’ made top-score, that included the five penalty points (as mentioned above.)

Blaze innings *Skipper Kirstie Gordon. *Internationals Nadine deKlerk (Rep. South Africa), Kathryn Bryce, and Sarah Bryce (Scotland.) *Scoring 14 runs with three ‘fours’ from Lizzy Scott’s first over, Marie Kelly was the only player throughout the entire match  to reach double-figures. *Marie Kelly 15(18) was first to depart when caught at ‘mid-on’ by Jess Woolston from Chloe Tryon’s first over. *Disaster struck when two wickets fell during the same over. *Tammy Beaumont 9(15) was caught by Chloe Turner and five balls later, Georgie Boyce 9(20) was caught at ‘mid-on’ by Jess Woolston. *After ten overs Power-play, Blaze were level-pegging 43/3 (vs 42/3.) *Scotland’s Bryce siblings both went ‘leg before.’ *Firstly, Sarah Bryce went ‘leg before’ to Katie Levick for a tenth ball duck. *Three overs later, Kathryn Bryce 5(18) went ‘leg before’ to Chloe Tryon.*Finally, Nadine deKlerk 3(7) was bowled by Katie Levick. *Sarah Glenn 7(22) and Lucy Higham 3(4) scored cautious singles from Chloe Tryon to seal Blaze’s third win.

Match summary Low-scoring match with a procession of 15 batter departures for single-figures. Diamonds chalked-up their lowest ever score 62/10. Blaze used just two bowlers. Rep. South Africa’s Nadine deKlerk took a personal best 7/33. Blaze’s Marie Kelly was the only batter from either side, to make double-figures throughout the entire match. Blaze remain undefeated and top the trophy leader-board with 3 wins (plus one ‘no result’ with shared points); from four rounds to date.
