Sunrisers Skittled By Stars ’Run Outs’

Sunrisers v South-East Stars at The Cloud County Ground, Chelmsford on Saturday, May 14:

Inaugural Cup holders ‘Stars’ have started their campaign to defend their Charlotte Edwards Cup title with an emphatic win.

*Although each of Sunrisers’ top five batters made double figures, their indecisive power play handed their opponents three overs advantage.

*As the match unfolded, Sunrisers misjudged three run-outs – including England’s Freya Davies scoring a direct hit.

*For Stars, top scorer Aylish Cranstone (56* from 46 balls) carried her bat, having made her maiden half-century as one of several Stars players retained from last season.

*Peppered by 20 ‘dot’ balls from Freya Davies’ top economy pace and Alice Capsey’s spin, Sunrisers reached 29 without loss from their first six overs.

*Three wickets were thrown away to ‘run outs:’ the first dismissing opener and Sunrisers’ top-scorer Cordelia Griffith (26 runs from 28 balls.)

*Mady Villiers (20 from 13) who started her career at Stars played an entertaining cameo until caught by Aylish Cranstone, off Emma Jones.

*A second ‘run out’ occurred when Freya Davies scored a direct hit, a whisker before the 100-ball (16.4 ov.) benchmark – when Sunrisers were 99/5.

*Thereafter, only one ‘four’ was scored.

*Alice Capsey staged a third ‘run out’ during skipper Bryony Smith’s penultimate over

*Only ‘ones’ and ‘twos’ were scampered by Joanne Gardner and Kelly Castle during Alice Davidson-Richards’ final ‘death’ over.

*By comparison, opener Aylish Cranstone took 11 balls to bag Stars a three-over advantage, reaching 32 without loss from their first three overs.

*Stars opening partnership added 46 with skipper Bryony Smith, by comparison already well ahead by their Power-play (51/1 vs 20/0)

*There followed a mini batting collapse until keeper Kira Chathli (26* from 24) formed a decisive partnership of 32 runs. Upon reaching the 100-ball (16.4 ov.) benchmark Chathli can be seen on the final videoclip (as mentioned below) striking the winning ‘four.’
