Mammoth England Score With Beaumont’s ‘Ton’ Clinches Series

  • +1

England Women vs New Zealand W ‘White Ferns’ 5th ODI at Canterbury on 26th September

Receiving POTM from Adam Collins, Tammy Beaumont (102 runs from 114 balls) scored her 8th ODI ‘ton’ and 2nd‘ton’ before her home crowd (Kent); Beaumont said it was good to ‘go out with a bang!’

Separately, Beaumont took 2 catches to dismiss Brooke Halliday and Suzie Bates. Winning two awards for: ‘player of the series;’ also ‘player of the summer,’ Heather Knight was ‘delighted to make match-winning contributions’. As winning skipper, Knight received England’s trophy for the Royal London ODI International Series Win (4-1.) ‘Ferns’ skipper Sophie Devine told fellow New Zealander Collins that ‘Ferns’ were out-performed and ‘today wasn’t her day.’

Broadcast live on SKY Sports TV, Youtube, commentators included Mark Butcher, Adam Collins (NZ), Ebony Rainford Brent and Lydia Greenway. Also broadcast via cricket social media (including Valkerie Baynes for ESPN-cric-info.)

*Before the match, skipper Knight’s rotated bowlers were Anya Shrubsole, Natalie Sciver and Kate Cross. ‘Ferns’ skipper Sophie Devine played Molly Penfold (pace) for Leigh Kasperek (spin). After the match, commentators mentioned the pitch was a ‘spinners wicket’ – with double the usual variation (2.4 degrees) which had suited Heather Knight (3/24); raising questions why Kasperek didn’t play?

*After 10 overs power-play ‘England’ were 55/0, reaching 95/0 by the 100-ball benchmark (16.4 ov.)

*Next ball, Lauren Winfield-Hill (43 runs from 57 balls) was caught by Amy Satterthwaite.

*Winfield-Hill was living dangerously, having been dropped 3 times.

*Skipper Knight wasn’t so lucky, falling for a 2nd ball duck to Lea Tahuhu.

*Opener Tammy Beaumont’s first ‘fifty’ came during the 23rd over.

*By midway (25ov.) England reached 143/2.

*During 29th over, Amy Jones was out, replaced Natalie Sciver (39.)

*Sciver was ‘leg before’ to Hannah Rowe upon review. Jones saw-off Rowe after hitting her for 14 runs including 3 ‘fours.’

*Amy Jones also saw-off Molly Penfold, bringing up England’s 200 with the first of two ‘fours.’ *Two wickets fell in quick succession: firstly Jones (60) having passed ‘fifty’ was caught by Lea Tahuhu.

*Also, Tammy Beaumont (102) – whose ‘ton’ came during the 42nd over – was caught by Suzie Bates at ‘mid-on.’

*England added 67 runs from the last 5 overs.

*Danni Wyatt (43*) who scored 4 ‘sixes’ & 2 ‘fours’ was partnered by Sophia Dunkley (33*) who’d lost-a-life (when dropped at backward point) went on to score 5 ‘fours’ as England made a mammoth 347.

*Between innings, Tammy Beaumont mentioned she’d earlier received her Kent ‘county cap’ and felt ‘pretty good’ about ‘going out on a hundred,’ ending the season on her home ground.

*During the first six overs, England’s opening pair of bowlers Anya Shrubsole and Natalie Sciver delivered ‘Ferns’ 25 ‘dot’ balls. Opener Suzie Bates (6) struck Anya Shrubsole skyward, handing Tammy Beaumont an easy catch at ‘point.’ At the end of 10 ov. power-play ‘Ferns’ were 33/1 (vs 55/0) and Sophie Ecclestone paired with Kate Cross were brought into the attack, taking 5 wickets. After 16.4 ov. ‘Ferns’ were 63/3 (vs 95/0.)

*Ecclestone took 2 wickets, bowling Lauren Down and catching a return dolly from Maddy Green.

*Cross later told commentators that her role was clear: ‘stump-to-stump’ bowling. Cross took 3 wickets for single figures.

*1st Amy Satterthwaite (6) caught at ‘mid-wicket’ by Natalie Sciver; 2nd Sophie Devine (3) ‘leg before’; 3rd Katey Martin (5) clean-bowled off-stump.

*After 25 ov. ‘Ferns were 107/6 (vs 143/2)

*Third pairing Heather Knight (3/24) and Charlie Dean (1/13) who bowled-out remaining tail-enders with 84 balls to spare.

*Hayley Jensen (19) top-edged to Anya Shrubsole at ‘backward-square;’

*Brooke Halliday (27) top-edged to Tammy Beaumont at ‘mid-wicket;’ Hannah Rowe (20) was ‘leg before’ to Knight.

*Finally, Lea Tahuhu (1) hit a vertical ‘skier’ caught in the deep by Lauren Winfield-Hill, from Charlie Dean’s final match ball.

*Summarizing the series, Ebony Rainford Brent said it was ‘outstanding.’ Lydia Greenway added that Charlie Dean was outstanding as ‘new talent.’ Greenway added that there was a ‘massive difference’ between getting into winning positions and closure: ‘going on to win’. Throughout the series that had been the main difference between both sides.
