Rio medallist Emily Diamond and University of Bath graduate Cameron Chalmers have today been confirmed alongside Team Bath AC’s Tom Gale in the Team GB athletics squad for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Diamond, who does some of her training at the University of Bath, will compete in her third Games after being selected in the women’s 4x400m relay squad, the event in which she won bronze with GB at Rio 2016.

Making his Olympic debut in the men’s 4x400m relay is Chalmers, who studied Sports Performance and was a multiple BUCS champion while representing the University of Bath in student competition. He was runner-up in the individual 400m at the British Championships.

High jumper Gale, coached by Denis Doyle at the Team Bath Sports Training Village, confirmed his place over the weekend by claiming victory at the Muller British Championships having previously set the Olympic qualifying standard.

Andrew Pozzi and Jazmin Saywers, who used to train at the University, have been selected by Team GB in the 110m hurdles and long jump respectively.

Levern Spencer, Gale’s high jump training partner, will also be competing for her native St Lucia in her fourth Games, while Camille Buscomb will represent New Zealand in the 5,000m and 10,000m – she trained at the University before returning to her home country at the start of the Covid pandemic.

Diamond and Gale’s selection means 16 sportspeople who currently train at the University of Bath will be representing Team GB at this summer’s Olympic Games in athletics, modern pentathlon, swimming and triathlon. Team Bath judoka Prisca Awiti-Alcaraz (Mexico), Ben Fletcher and Megan Fletcher (both Ireland) have also qualified for Tokyo.
