Wasps maintain their third place position above Lightning in the table after securing 5 points on the road against Sale Sharks. MacDonald, Kildunne, Wilson-Hardy and Crake all found themselves crossing the white wash which along with two penalty kicks from Jones added up to the 30-8 win.
Wasps started the game on the defensive leg with Sharks in possession of the ball. Wasps took advantage of a penalty opportunity to take play into Sharks’ half. MacDonald was the first to cross the line for Wasps with a cheeky snipe through Sharks’ defence. Jones came with the extras which also marked her 50th point in a Wasps shirt.
Sale Sharks’ were penalised for a deliberate knock on from their no.11 and left fighting a man down just 10minutes into the game. Taking advantage of a weakened defence, Wasps sent it wide from a scrum to Kildunne who ran it over for Wasps second of the game.
A series of penalties against Wasps in their own half resulted in a points opportunity for Sharks – Daley Mclean securing the home side their first points on the board with a kick for posts.
Just shy of the half time whistle, Wasps moved the ball wide from a lineout to find Wilson Hardy who fought her way through the Sharks to find the try line and send the Wasps into the changing room 14 points ahead.
Just minutes into the second half came the turn of Wasps’ forwards to inject some numbers into the game. A driving maul set up the platform for Wasps’ forwards to bullet their way though Sharks’ defence – Crake securing the try assisted by Molloy and Monaghan.
With two penalty opportunities – Jones added an extra 6 to the scoreboard in the 42nd and 47th minutes.
In the final 10minutes of play – Sharks appeared to find some fuel to add to the fire and turned up the heat. Wasps found themselves defending their try line from just inside the 22m. A crossfield kick from Daley Mclean put Delany in prime position to sneak Sharks a try before the full time whistle.
Next week Wasps welcome Gloucester Hartpury to Twyford avenue for the final round before the festive break. The last time Gloucester graced Twyford Avenue they left with a 22-17 win. After three consecutive wins – Wasps will be looking to turn the score around next week to end 2020 on a high!
