England Women Sevens will take on New Zealand in the Cup quarters of the Cape Town 7s on Sunday, (KO 8.56am live on Sky Sports Action).
It was a tough opening day as they were defeated 32-0 by Australia on Friday, while day two saw Charlie Hayter’s side beaten against a strong and ever-emerging USA, before defeating Ireland 36-7.
After a close first half with a converted try the difference, the Women’s Eagles Sevens began to dominate and were three tries to the good courtesy of Alev Kelter, Kristi Kirshe and Naya Tapper as the contest drew to a close. England did not let their heads drop and Deborah Fleming crossed to ensure her side finished strongly.
They then faced Ireland in a re-match of the ninth place extra time play-off victory in Dubai last weekend and produced an outstanding attacking display, winning 36-7.
Celia Quansah crossed twice in quick succession while Alex Matthews and Emma Uren scored within a minute – Eve Higgins responded for the Irish.
Fleming added further gloss before Jodie Ounsley, who joined the sevens programme in the summer, scored her first try of the World Series.
Hayter’s side now face New Zealand on Sunday morning, live on Sky Sports Action.
