Grand Slam-seeking Lucie Safarova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands proved too strong for the Team Bath MCTA Tennis ladies’ doubles pairing at Wimbledon on Saturday.Wimbledon

Anna Smith and  Jocelyn Rae progressed to the second round of the doubles competitions after beating Slovakian Jana Cepelova and Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland on Wednesday but they were unable to get past Safarova and Mattek-Sands, who have already won the Australian and French Open titles this year,  and who beat the British Federation Cup pairing 6-3 6-0 on Court 8.

Marcus Daniell – who also trains at the University of Bath – saw his men’s doubles campaign ended by Jonathan Erlich and Philipp Petzschner despite a battling performance.

New Zealander Daniell, also coached by Dave Sammel, and Brazilian partner Marcos Demoliner went down fighting on Court 7 in their third-round encounter.

After losing the first set 6-3, they leveled by taking the second 6-4 but Erlich and Petzschner were able to take the next two 6-3 to seal victory – denying Daniell and Demoliner a break-back opportunity in the final game.
