An away win for the Lady Glovers keeps them in third place in WSL 2, just three points behind both Reading Women and Doncaster Rovers Belles
It may not have been the prettiest of wins but Stephanie Williams believes the narrow victory over Everton demonstrated Yeovil Town’s battling qualities.
Helen Bleazard’s second-half goal was all the separated the two sides with victory ensuring third-placed Yeovil Town sit three points behind Reading and Doncaster in FA Women’s Super League 2.
Williams said: “It was definitely an important win. We are really glad of those three points. We know we didn’t play well but sometimes you need to grind results out. It’s not luck at all, we do put hard work into it. It’s just at the end of the day, that wasn’t our best performance.”
“But we know that, and we can work on it in the week. We know we can do better, which is good because we get the win out of it as well. It’s definitely a big boost. All the girls will be buzzing after this one. Everton are a really good team. “They do want to play football and they were unfortunate. We are aiming high in the table, and even if we have to scrap to get there that’s what we’re aiming for.”
Chances were rare in the first half, but Yeovil top scorer Corinne Yorston’s low shot across goal was pushed clear by Megan Walsh on 27 minutes.
Emily Hollinshead volleyed well over for the hosts ten minutes later when Michelle Hinnigan’s free-kick was not cleared properly.
Yeovil were in front four minutes after the restart, when Bleazard whipped in a left-wing corner which Walsh could only parry into her own net.
Everton pushed for an equaliser, but Simone Magill’s shot deflected wide on 51 minutes while Hinnigan stung Charlotte Haynes’ palms with a fierce strike.
Everton manager Andy Spence said: “I certainly thought in the first half we were by far the dominant team and we really felt in a good position going in at half-time. We thought if we carried on doing what we were doing, with some small improvements, we would go on and win the game.”
“It’s a difficult one. For the goal to go in at the near post, straight from a corner, is disappointing. It’s doubly bad when you feel you don’t deserve to be in that position. We can’t get too down with ourselves though obviously reality hits, losing the games we’ve lost and with our points tally at the moment it’s nowhere near where we wanted to be.”
Yeovil face Watford LFC away next Sunday, followed by Doncaster Rovers Belles at Home on Sunday 31st May, in the last match before the mid-season break.
