Monday 2nd March was round 6 of the NSL League, another away fixture for Hertfordshire Mavericks. Another trip on the M1 up north, but this time to Huddersfield to face Yorkshire Jets.
Mavericks starting 7: GS Louisa Watson GA Kadeen Corbin WA Sasha Corbin C Sophia Candappa WD Sam May GD Layla Guscoth GK Naida Hutchinson
7.45pm saw Jets take the first centre pass at Team Hud, immediately taking the ball to goal. Mavericks responded with strong attack and the first goal of the evening being scored by Kadeen Corbin. Both teams came out strong from the start, contesting every ball and taking it to goal. With some calm controlled netball Mavericks took the lead 11-9, but Jets continued to push and finished the first quarter leading 13-12.
Mavericks made no changes going into the 2nd quarter, and continued to drive the ball through the court to the shooters. A few errors from both teams but more from the Mavericks side, saw Jets pull away and finish half time leading 31-25.
Head Coach Sam Bird made some changes going into the 3rd quarter bringing Lindsay Keable to GD, Camilla Buchanan to WD and Sophie Hankin to GA from the bench. Fresh legs on court provided pressure over the ball, limiting the long balls into the circle. Defence continued to apply pressure, creating lots of turnovers which unfortunately weren’t converted. Jets pulled away during this quarter finishing with a 10 goal lead. (45-35)
The final 15 minutes of the game saw Rose Morgan-Smith come on at Centre, the squad dug deep and continued to work at intense pace to claw back goals. Unfortunately Jets continued to find the net and finished the game winning 56-42.
This wasn’t the result Hertfordshire Mavericks were looking for tonight, but onwards and upwards for Saturdays London Live match against Surrey Storm at the Copperbox.
