The England Women U19 squad for the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup 2025 in Malaysia has been named.

Spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman impressed domestically and produced some stand-out performances for Southern Brave in this year’s edition of The Hundred and is selected while Davina Perrin, who featured in the 2023 edition of the ICC Women’s U19 World Cup, is also included.

Sixteen teams from around the world will take part in the 41-match event across 15 days of competition from 18 January to 2 February 2025. It will be the hosts Malaysia’s first appearance in the U19 Women’s T20 World Cup as well as Samoa’s first appearance in an ICC World Cup event.

Drawn in Group B, England take on Ireland, Pakistan and USA with all group B matches in Johor.

The second edition of the tournament comes on the back of a successful inaugural event in South Africa in 2023 where England finished as runners up after being defeated by India in a thrilling final.

Five non-travelling reserves have also been selected. The reserves won’t travel but will take a full part throughout the preparation phase and act as stand-by players should a replacement player be required: Maria Andrews (The Blaze), Sophie Beech (Central Sparks), Daisy Gibb (Southern Vipers), Poppy Tulloch (Southern Vipers), Annie Williams (The Blaze).

Amuruthaa Surenkumar (Sunrisers)
Prisha Thanawala (The Blaze)
Erin Thomas (Northern Diamonds)
Grace Thompson (Northern Diamonds)

Recently appointed England Women U19 Performance Lead Chris Guest will lead as head coach and be assisted by former England international Beth Morgan and Dan Helesfay. Morgan represented her country for over a decade, playing seven Tests, 72 ODIs and 28 Twenty20s, featuring in the 2009 double when England won the 50-over World Cup and the ICC Women’s World Twenty20. She currently works as a Regional Talent Manager for Southern Vipers. Helesfay is an assistant coach at South East Stars and Hundred side Welsh Fire having previously been a Senior Regional Talent Manager at Western Storm.

Richard Bedbrook, Head of England Women Performance Pathways, said: “It is always an exciting time to be able to name an U19 World Cup squad and all those chosen, including the non-travelling reserve group, can be very proud of this achievement.

“The quality in the group highlights the work of each of the regional teams across both their senior and Academy environments and I, plus colleagues, are indebted to them on the development work they continue to put in.

“We hope each individual takes a huge amount from the experience they are about to have and uses it to continue developing themselves as a person and player.

“This also goes for the staff group, a number of whom across various roles are also employees of the Regional teams and who will hopefully take huge amounts of experience and enjoyment from being a part of the programme.”

Chris Guest, England Women U19 Performance Lead, also added: “What excites me most about working with the under-19 age group is the constant cycle of new talent and new groups coming through.

“We’ve named a squad which features some players who have been involved at this age group before and some who haven’t.

“This World Cup is a part of these players’ journey, not the end or the start and our message to them is to embrace the challenge, evolve ourselves and enjoy the ride. Naturally we want to do well but the programme is about developing these players in the future and for the long-term.

“It was really exciting to see Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Hannah Baker, Seren Smale and Charis Pavely feature for the senior team in Ireland after representing the U19s in the first edition of this World Cup in 2023 and this acts as real inspiration for this group and demonstrates how important this tournament can be for a player’s development.”

The ECB has announced the appointment of Chris Guest as England Women U19 Performance Lead.

Guest arrives from The Blaze where he spent three years as head coach of Loughborough Lightning and then The Blaze following the region’s move to Nottinghamshire in 2022, leading the latter to Charlotte Edwards Cup success this summer.

Alongside his regional commitments, he led the England Women U19 World Cup programme as the first head coach in 2023 and then the U19 tri-series between Sri Lanka, England and Australia earlier this year.

The 40-year-old has also been assistant coach at Northern Superchargers during the previous three editions of The Hundred.

The first of its kind performance role has a significant coaching element as head coach of the U19 side for the forthcoming ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup 2025 in Malaysia as well as future tours whilst also leading on talent identification from the academy and senior programmes which will feed into England’s U19 activity.

Guest previously worked at the ECB as a regional talent manager, Derbyshire in a coaching capacity and Staffordshire Cricket as lead performance and pathway coach.

Guest said: “The pride and excitement of wearing the Three Lions over last few years has been immense and to be able to do so in this new role is an incredible feeling.

“With the growth of the women’s game, it’s a privilege to take on this role as it will focus on ensuring our young cricketers get the cricket they need at the right time which I am extremely passionate about.

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at The Blaze. It’s a great place to work and has been massive part of my development and I wish them every success in the future.

“Having left the ECB four years ago, I have gone away and grown. I’m really excited to take on this role and work with the country’s top talent whilst putting my own stamp on things. My philosophy is centred around creating environments where players are willing to fail in order to improve. We all began playing for the love of the game and I cannot wait to see the next generation of cricketers enjoying what they do and playing with smiles on their faces.

“I can’t wait to work with the other coaches and wider staff and to get started.”

Head of England Women Performance Pathways, Richard Bedbrook, said: “We are delighted to have Chris on board.

“He has vast experience in the women’s game, strong relationships with and knowledge of all of our domestic teams and this new full-time role will allow him to help shape the development of our highest potential players in a collaborative fashion before, during and after any international U19 activity.

“His qualities have hugely affected the previous England Women U19 environments and we are all looking forward to his inspirational methods influencing future programmes and systems in a positive way.”

Director of England Women’s Cricket, Jonathan Finch, added: “The ICC Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup provides fantastic opportunities for our young talent to experience tournament match play against their peers from other countries.

“Chris’s appointment allows us to build on those experiences, through closer relationships with the counties, to enhance the support the players get at this age group.

“Chris brings a wealth of experience from the women’s domestic game and will play a key role in shaping the experiences young players have on their journey to international cricket.”

The format will see teams progressing from the Group stages to enter the Super Six stage starting on 25 January, where two groups of six teams will compete to determine the semi-finalists and the subsequent finalists. If India qualify for the semi-finals, they will play Semi-Final 2, which will take place on 31 January at 14h30 local time. A downloadable infographic discussing the event format is available here.

ICC CEO, Geoff Allardice said: “We are delighted to announce the schedule for the second edition of the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup and bringing an ICC event of this stature to Malaysia for the first time since the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2008.

“This is a special event to the ICC and forms an important part of our Global Growth Strategy of raising the profile of women’s cricket and further growing the game around the world. It is also a unique opportunity to introduce our vast global audiences to the future stars of the sport.

“We look forward to building on the success from the foundation laid at the inaugural event in South Africa in 2023. We wish all the teams the very best of luck in their preparation and to the Malaysian Cricket Association in organising the event.”

Host Tournament Director for the ICC U19 Women’s World Cup 2025, Dinesh Muthuraman said: “Malaysia is proud to host the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup in 2025, continuing our tradition of supporting the growth of cricket on the global stage. In 2008, we had the honour of hosting the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, where current stars like Virat Kohli, Kane Williamson and Trent Boult among many others, showcased their talents. Now, it is the turn of women’s cricket, and we are confident that this U19 Women’s T20 World Cup will be a launching pad for the next generation of cricketing legends.

“Women’s cricket is experiencing unprecedented growth both in Malaysia and around the world. We are fully confident that this World Cup will further accelerate that momentum, leading to significant developments in the sport, especially for women’s cricket. The matches will take place at premier venues including Bayuemas Oval and UKM YSD Oval in Selangor, Dato’ Dr. Harjit Singh Johor Cricket Academy (JCA) Oval in Johor, and the Borneo Cricket Ground in Sarawak. Malaysia is looking forward to hosting these future stars and contributing to their journey in the world of cricket.

“On behalf of the Malaysian Cricket Association, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude to the International Cricket Council for entrusting us with this prestigious event. We are committed to delivering a successful and memorable tournament, showcasing Malaysia’s ability to host world-class sporting events.”

England will participate in the maiden Women’s Transatlantic Quad Series this July, hosted by the Welsh Rugby Union in Cardiff.

The new U19 programme is a first for the Women’s Pathway at England Rugby, which has been specifically designed to support targeted players transitioning from the U18 age-grade and for U20 players not selected for the upcoming Six Nations Women’s Summer Series in Parma, Italy.

The series follows a successful U20 Women’s tri-series between Wales, USA and Canada in the summer of 2023, with England now being integrated into plans alongside the two key North American partners.

Confirmation of the new competition follows instrumental developments relating to the RFU’s announcement of new centralised Player Development Group (PDG) centres, investment from The British & Irish Lions funding and the inaugural Six Nations Women’s Summer Series.

Taking place between Sunday 13th and Wednesday 24th July upon conclusion of the Women’s Summer Series, England will face two Tests against Canada (Friday 19th July, 17:30 BST kick-off) and USA (Wednesday 24th July, 17:30 BST kick-off) at Cardiff Arms Park.

The travelling party of 28 pathway players will include an option for a limited number of players up to the age of 23 to be selected in each matchday squad.

Management have started work with the selected cohort in training camps running alongside U20 Women’s team, who will experience 10 camp days in preparation for the trip over the border.

With the tournament designed to ensure further international exposure for age-grade players, the series also offers the opportunity for further alignment between England Rugby pathway management. Within the competition window, match week 1 will be led by England U18 Women’s head coach James Cooper and his coaching group with further support from U20 Women’s staff, with LJ Lewis and her team then leading the players into match week 2 with further assistance from the U18 staff.

Streaming information for the Transatlantic Quad Series will be communicated in due course.

LJ Lewis, England U20 Women’s head coach and programme lead, said: “Confirmation of this series follows on from the announcement of the first Six Nations Women’s Summer Series, it feels like a transformational time for the women’s pathway in the sport.

“The Transatlantic Quad Series offers a platform for our players transitioning between age-groups and is a window for development for our girls through meaningful game time.

“We’re delighted to have been invited to participate in the series and to have the opportunity for further cross-collaboration between nations in order to develop women’s rugby.”

James Cooper commented: “I’m confident the recent developments centred around the women’s pathway will prove significant for our players, and this series will be no less important.

“Not only is the series a fantastic opportunity for our players, but also bringing together pathway staff cross age-groups to fortify the alignment we have here at England Rugby.

“We’re very thankful to our hosts in Wales and are excited to showcase the impressive talent we’re lucky to possess.”

    How are the Under 19s faring? http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/2023/07/27/how-are-the-under-19s-faring/ Thu, 27 Jul 2023 12:03:30 +0000 http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/?p=48320 Continue Reading →

    ]]>
Let’s try and see how well the ECB’s pathway is working for girls’ and women’s cricket.

Here is the Under 19 squad that took part in their first Under 19 World Cup in Potchefstroom, South Africa last January:

Ellie Anderson, Hannah Baker, Josie Groves, Liberty Heap, Niamh Holland, Ryana MacDonald-Gay, Emma Marlow, Charis Pavely, Davina Perrin, Lizzie Scott, Grace Scrivens (captain), Sophia Smale, Seren Smale, Alexa Stonehouse, Maddie Ward

Of them the following have been playing in the eight regional squads this summer:

    Ellie Anderson – Sparks
    Hannah Baker – Thunder
    Josie Groves – The Blaze
    Liberty Heap – Thunder
    Niamh Holland – Storm
    Ryana MacDonald-Gay – SE Stars
    Emma Marlow – Diamonds
    Charis Pavely – Sparks
    Davina Perrin – Sparks
    Lizzie Scott – Diamonds
    Grace Scrivens – Sunrisers
    Sophia Smale – Storm
    Seren Smale – Thunder
    Alexa Stonehouse – SE Stars
    Maddie Ward –

So Maddie Ward is the only one to miss out on a regional squad, but she’s a wicket-keeper, so her chances were always restricted by the presence of one or two established players in her recruitment area. She’s been a part of Nottinghamshire’s pathway for nine years already, so has a heap of experience.

And several more youngsters have been making a name for themselves around the country since January.

The most recent highlight from the squad was a 4-34 for Sophia Smale’s left-arm slows at Cheltenham on Monday.

RHF matches have taken place at seven test grounds (Ageas Bowl, Edgbaston, Headingley, Old Trafford, Riverside, Sophia Gardens and Trent Bridge), as well as county grounds, giving young players privileged entry.

They are the proof of the success of the pathway structures the ECB has put in place. Though they are mostly able to play for the regional team closest to home, the total of only eight can lead to interesting splits. Seren and Sophia Smale, despite sharing a name and both being Welsh, are committed to two different teams. That is explained since Seren comes from North Wales and Sophia from the South. Their logical destinations were therefore Thunder and Storm respectively.

It remains to be seen which, (if any?) of those fifteen will become the first to receive a full England cap. The brackets are strictly unnecessary, but we can’t read selectors’ minds, can we!

It’s the first time the best U19 cricketers have come together from the women’s game to compete in an ICC Global Event. The tournament will be hosted by South Africa, and sees 16 countries competing from January 14 to January 29.

In addition to the 11 Full ICC Members, there are five Associates in the competition – Indonesia, Rwanda, Scotland, the UAE and the USA. England will be in Group B, alongside Pakistan, Zimbabwe and Rwanda.

    Ellie Anderson (Central Sparks)

    Hannah Baker (Central Sparks)

    Josie Groves (Lightning)

    Liberty Heap (Thunder)

    Niamh Holland (Western Storm)

    Ryana MacDonald-Gay (South East Stars)

    Charis Pavely (Central Sparks)

    Davina Perrin (Central Sparks)

    Lizzie Scott (Northern Diamonds)

    Grace Scrivens (Sunrisers)

    Sophia Smale (Western Storm)

    Seren Smale (Thunder)

    Alexa Stonehouse (South East Stars)

    Maddie Ward (Lightning)

Chris Guest, of Lightning, has been chosen as Head Coach following an open recruitment process. He will be assisted by Laura Marsh (Sunrisers) and Darren Franklin (Central Sparks).

Five non-travelling reserves have also been selected. The reserves won’t travel but will take a full part throughout the preparation phase and act as stand-by players should a replacement player be required: Emily Churms (Central Sparks), Charlotte Lambert (South East Stars), Bethan Miles (South East Stars), Jemima Spence (South East Stars), Mary Taylor (Southern Vipers).

Selection was chaired by Richard Bedbrook, Head of England Women Performance Pathways. Bedbrook said: “It’s hugely exciting to name this squad and to think ahead to the opportunity that awaits the players.

“They’re a tremendous group of young cricketers with great potential at the beginning of their journeys in the game. They’ll all benefit hugely from this experience – on and off the field. It’s important to compete at this age-group and it’s equally important to continue the process of learning what it takes to progress to the next level. I’m sure we’ll take a lot away from the tournament.

“We have the ambition for the next few months to be a significant life moment for all the players and ensure they use it as a springboard towards making an impact in senior regional cricket, and hopefully beyond in years to come.

“The ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup will provide an exciting platform for the best young players around the world and it will be really exciting to see our players compete against their peers in a global event.”

Superleague players and England Netball Roses Academy squad members are among the 40 rising stars named in the Team Bath Netball U21 and U19 Netball Performance League squads for 2021.

Shooter Hannah Passmore – a University of Bath Criminology student who is supported by a Buchan Jones Sporting Scholarship – will once again combine her Superleague duties for the Blue & Gold with representing the U21s, who she co-captained during the 2020 season.

She is one of five returning players from last season’s squad along with Amelia Baker, Issy Highsted, Joanna Leslie and Rachael Fee, who was also part of Team Bath’s Superleague set-up in 2020.

Also selected are University of Bath students Steph Marsden, a former Surrey Storm U19 NPL player and Santander Scholar, and twins Jasmine and Jemma Nightingale, who have previously represented Saracens Mavericks in NPL competition.

Molly Hole, who skippered England U17s to the Netball Europe title last year, will co-captain the U21s along with Highsted. Kemi Afolayan, Fee and Ellen Morgan are also part of the leadership group.

Nikki Lloyd, U21 Head Coach, said: “I am really excited & looking forward to the journey ahead with this new, young and diverse squad. We are at the beginning of a new U21 cycle, and the capacity and potential of the group is very exciting.

“Retaining members from the curtailed 2019-20 season, we have also added a diverse group of individuals new to the Blue & Gold from varied backgrounds.

“The group have been working very hard and have adapted well to the new way of training and Covid protocols. We all feel very grateful and privileged to have the opportunity to represent the Blue & Gold and play the game.”

Hole is one of eight Blue & Gold players selected for the 2021 England Netball Roses Academy long squad and the other seven – Giselle Burnett, Sophie Hamilton, Daisy Harrison, Lily Jones, Isla May, Charlotte Steer and Bella Valeur-Adu – are all named in an exciting Team Bath U19 NPL squad.

Rosie Bartlett, an England U19 player during the 2019-20 season, makes a dynamic return to Team Bath and will captain the U19 side this season. She will be supported by vice-captain George Ford and a leadership team of Fabienne Bull, Jones and May.

Natalie Roddy, Team Bath Netball Academy Head Coach and U19 Lead Coach, said: “This is an exciting group of athletes with a blend of both experience and new talent. The potential this season and into the future is huge.

“I am looking forward to working with Anya Le Monnier, a Team Bath Superleague training partner and the U19 Assistant Coach, to see what we can achieve.”

All 20 members of the U19 squad train with the Team Bath Academy Development Centre talent-development network based across the South West of England and supported by Haines Watts, Team Bath’s principal partner.

“The players, coaches, support staff and volunteers all recognise what a privilege it is to be able to play in such challenging circumstances,” Roddy added. “They have adapted so well to all of the new protocols and are embracing every opportunity. This will be a season like no other but one that I hope will deliver great leaning opportunities on many levels.”

Team Bath Netball is supported by its Principal Partner, chartered accountants Haines Watts, who are also a pathway partner, and by Rengen Developments and Centurion Chartered Financial Planners. O’Neills are Team Bath’s official kit supplier.
