  • Largest gathering of players in the U17 and U18 age groups to take place to date
  • The largest gathering of pathway players to date takes place this week at Malvern College. Approximately 1,150 U17 and U18 male and female players from every Regional Academy and Centre of Excellence will meet to take part in a festival of rugby.

The 14 academies, covering the 13 Gallagher Premiership clubs plus the Yorkshire Academy and the 11 Centres of Excellence, play a series of festival games.

During this week of rugby, which will serve as preparation for the 2022-23 season, the focus is on developing individual players and giving them the chance to play against people from all over the country.

Don Barrell, Head of Performance Pathways and Programmes said: “The opportunity to bring almost every player in the under 17 and under 18 age groups together in one place will provide invaluable learning and development opportunities.

“It’s the first time we’ve had so many players from right across the country on one site and we thank Malvern College for hosting the festival.

“This is also the first time the female players from the Centres of Excellence have been involved in the festival and I know they are all looking forward to the experience.”

    Superb silver for Pentathlon GB’s Wilson and Hood http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/2019/07/20/superb-silver-for-pentathlon-gbs-wilson-and-hood/ Sat, 20 Jul 2019 22:31:12 +0000 http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/?p=31401 Continue Reading →

Sarah Wilson and Josh Hood produced a stunning laser run as they surged through the field to take silver in the Under 19 mixed relay at the Youth World Championships. After ending the Under 19 Euros with mixed relay bronze, the TASS supported British duo upped that to world silver as they claimed Pentathlon GB’s first medal of the week in Sofia.

In the Under 17 girls’ final, Larissa Hannam finished 24th with Gina Speakman 30th as both athletes recorded their best ever major championship finishes in hot conditions in the Bulgarian capital.

The mixed event concluded the Under 19 relays after Toby Price and George Case finished 5th in the boys’ relay on Thursday whilst Annabel Denton and Emma Whitaker came home 9th in the girls’ relay yesterday. The opening two days of the Championship also saw Under 17 qualifying with Larissa and Gina needing to make it through to the last 36 in the girls’ competition whilst Sam Cobb and Charlie Brown qualified for the boys’ final yesterday, despite having to borrow other people’s kit after their luggage failed to arrive.

Story of the Day – Under 19 Mixed Relay

On their last international start, Trowbridge’s Wilson and Hull’s Hood teamed up to claim mixed relay bronze at the Under 19 European Championships and the young British duo were looking to continue that momentum as they began their Under 19 World campaigns.

Despite not being the favoured discipline of either athlete, a solid start in the swim saw the Brits record a 2:16.80 for the 200m. In the fencing hall, some superb hits from both athletes saw Wilson and Hood record 25 victories and just 15 defeats from their 40 bouts, the third best result in the discipline.

Although they couldn’t add to that tally in the bonus round, their fencing performance moved the 18-year-olds up to 8th after the opening two disciplines and within striking distance of the medals heading into the laser run.

Although there wasn’t much to choose between the leading nations at the first shoot, a devastating first 800m loop from Wilson saw her move the Brits into third by the end of the first lap. That was a position she maintained to the changeover whilst continuing to put distance into those behind. Hood continued the team’s good work, consolidating third before making his move at the final shoot with a 10-second visit to the range. That saw him vault into second ahead of his Mexican counterpart, a place he maintained with a determined final 800m run to claim a superb silver medal with South Korea taking gold. It was a brilliant run-shoot display from the Brits as they clocked the quickest time for the laser run and backed up their European performance with another excellent relay demonstration.

Celebrations will be limited for the young Brits though with both facing a busy schedule this week. Wilson will be back in action tomorrow for Under 19 girls’ qualifying along with Annabel Denton, Emma Whitaker and Georgina Mitchell whilst Hood returns on Monday when he competes in Under 19 boys’ qualifying with Toby Price, George Case and Ross Charlton.

Story of the Day – Under 17 Girls Final

The Under 17 girls’ final began in the pool with both British athletes in action impressing as they improved on their times from Thursday’s qualifying. West Yorkshire’s Speakman was in particularly impressive form, recording the second quickest time of 2:16.49 with Lancashire’s Hannam stopping the clock in 2:26.34.

With the Under 17 age group a modern triathlon, it was straight to the laser run where some sharp shooting from Hannam helped her to cross the line in 24th, two places higher than she managed at last month’s Under 17 European Championships.

Despite some struggles on the range, strong running from Speakman saw her come home 30th in Sofia, her best finish at a major championship with another season in the Under 17 age group still ahead of her.

Tomorrow sees the Under 17 boys’ final taking place in Sofia with Sam Cobb and Charlie Brown both in action for Pentathlon GB before Hannam and Speakman will team up in the Under 17 girls’ relay on Monday.

Eight Pentathlon GB youngsters will travel to Bulgaria for this year’s Under 17 European Championships which begin at the end of June. The octet consists of the top four girls and top four boys on the 2017 Pentathlon GB Under 17 Ranking List which was created following this year’s two Under 17 Ranking Competitions.

Three of the team – Lancashire’s Emma Whitaker, Somerset’s George Case and Kent’s Tom Wilton – will be making their second appearances at the Under 17 European Championships having competed on home soil in 2016.

16-year-old Whitaker, who enjoyed victory at the Portuguese Under 17 National Championships in April, will be joined in the girls’ team by Warwick’s Georgina Mitchell, Hertfordshire’s Kamie Lowe and Plymouth’s Annabel Denton. Fellow 16-year-old Mitchell has enjoyed an outstanding 12 months, beginning with victory at the 2016 Under 17 British Modern Tetrathlon Championships before finishing an impressive 4th on her international debut at Olympic Hopes in Prague last October. Mitchell, who trains at Plymouth College, has also produced a strong beginning to 2017 domestically and has finished 1st and 2nd at the two Under 17 Ranking Events.

Lowe, who currently studies and trains at Saint Felix School, is another athlete who has made a promising start to 2017, including an international debut at the GB Youth International in March. The 16-year-old then claimed a bronze medal on her first overseas event at the Portuguese Under 17 Championships in April as part of a Pentathlon GB team that contained the same 4 girls that have been selected for the European Championships.

Plymouth College’s Denton, the youngest member of the squad, has earned her place in the team with blistering performances at both Under 17 Ranking Competitions which sees her sit 4th on the GB Under 17 Ranking List. Denton, who will turn 14 just a few days before the Championships, also impressed in Portugal where she claimed silver as part of a GB 1-2-3-4.

In the boys’ team, Wilton and Case, who finished 18th and 21st respectively at the 2016 Under 17 European Championships will be joined by Yorkshire Pentathlon Club duo Toby Price and Josh Hood. The four boys have also enjoyed good starts to 2017 with 16-year-old Price claiming victory at the first Under 17 ranking competition of the year at Hartpury College.

It was Ashford School Modern Pentathlon Club’s Wilton who took the honours at the second ranking competition of the year, backing up his victory at the Under 17 Portuguese National Championships earlier in April. Leweston Pentathlon Academy’s Case has already enjoyed international success in 2017 with a stunning silver medal at the GB Youth International in March whilst 16-year-old Hood has enjoyed a consistent beginning to the season that has seen him compete at internationals in the UK, Portugal and Spain already this year.

The Championships in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria will follow the modern triathlon format which sees all athletes complete a 200m swim before the laser run (combined running and shooting).

England’s U17s came from behind to beat Serbia 4-1 and earn themselves a semi final place against Germany in the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship.

Having won their opening two matches, they only needed to earn a point against Serbia, however, just before half time Miljana Ivanovic put the hosts ahead.

Minutes into the second half Georgia Stanway scored a penalty to level the score and, when Serbia went down to 10 shortly afterwards with Isidora Vuckovic being shown a red card, the young Lionesses upped their game and Niamh Charles, Ellie Brazil and sub Hanah Cain adding goals.

England will now take on Germany, runners-up in Group B, on Friday in the Lionesses’ first Euro semi-final since 2013.

The two finalists and the winners of the third-place play-off will qualify for the FIFA Women’s U17 World Cup in Jordan in September.

England beat Belarus 12-0 in the UEFA Women’s U17 Championship moving them a step closer to the semi-finals.

In their first game of the competition they beat Norway 3-2 but this match was a different ball game with Ella Toone scoring after just 5 minutes and the young Lionesses were 4-0 up within 15 minutes.

Belarus could do nothing to stem the tide as seven of the Lionesses got on the score sheet.

    England goalscorers: Ella Toone (5, 38), Anna Filbey (7, 19), Alessia Russo (15, 23), Georgia Stanway (29), Hannah Cain (71, 75), Ellie Brazil (80+1), Grace Smith (74, 80+5),

England Women’s Under-17s opened their Euro Finals campaign with a 3-2 win over Norway.

John Griffiths’s side, who eased into Belarus 2016 by winning five of their six qualifiers, took the lead just after the quarter-hour mark through Liverpool midfielder Niamh Charles with her sixth goal in seven Euro matches.

Chelsea forward Alessia Russo doubled the lead on 36 minutes. Remarkably, it was her 10th goal in this year’s Euro campaign.

Lena Tyriberget’s side came roaring back to level courtesy of a second-half brace from Sophie Haug.

But the Young Lionesses found another gear and Arsenal’s Anna Filbey won the game with 11 minutes remaining.

Next up is host nation Belarus, who lost 5-1 to Serbia in their opening match, on Saturday afternoon.

The top two teams in each group will make it through to the semi-finals, while the top three teams at the tournament will qualify for the FIFA Women’s U17s World Cup which will be held in Jordan in September.
