Surrey (women)  vs Hampshire (women)  – match 35 – League One – at Guildford, Woodbridge Road on Thursday 24 July 2025

Match played three days before Surrey women’s triumphant trophy win at 20-overs. Previously Hampshire women won ‘convincingly’ on 27 April (match 8) at 50 overs. On the day, commentators were astonished by Surrey women’s ‘massive win’ over top-of-table Hampshire women. Following rain interruption, Surrey women were set a new target with 19 overs docked, playing in ‘miserable’ conditions. Alice-Davidson-Richards ‘soldiered-on’ with an injured foot, taking guest Australian Grace Harris as her runner. Partnered by Alice Monaghan, the trio held their nerve when the match came down to the final over. Alice-Davidson-Richards produced a memorable finale, scoring ’six’ to tie and another ‘four’ from the next ball, to win the match with two balls remaining (reported elsewhere as ‘one’, when omitting Georgia Adams bowling a ‘wide.’) Commentators (unannounced) were Georgie Heath (Women’s cricket chat) with Toby Reynolds (Sports Gazette’s cricket editor.) Weather was overcast with intermittent light and heavy showers of rain.

Surrey Women (154-5) beat Bears Women (153-9) by 5 wickets.

Surrey Women were crowned champions of the first-ever Vitality Blast women’s competition after a convincing five-wicket win over the Bears Women at the Kia Oval.

Grace Harris led the way for the hosts with a match-winning 63* from just 33 balls, guiding Surrey to victory with 20 balls to spare.

Having defeated The Blaze in the Eliminator earlier in the day, Bears were sent into bat first.

Surrey struck early, with Alexa Stonehouse (2–39) removing Meg Austin for 4 in the second ball of the match. Davina Perrin followed soon after, dismissed for a three-ball duck by Alice Capsey (1–33).

Issy Wong top-scored for the Bears with 31, but after becoming Stonehouse’s second wicket, the visitor’s innings faltered. Four wickets fell in five overs, reducing them to 115 for 8 by the 15th over. Phoebe Franklin (2–16) helped close out the innings as Surrey’s bowlers restricted the Bears to 153.

In reply, Surrey captain Bryony Smith made 21, while Danni Wyatt-Hodge fell for 5, caught off Em Arlott (2–19).

Capsey added a swift 15, and Sophia Dunkley chipped in with 23 before being stumped by Nat Wraith off Amu Surenkumar (2–13).

However, it was Harris who took control of the chase, her powerful knock including seven 4s and two 6s sealed the win and the trophy for Surrey.

The domestic summer continues with the Metro Bank One Day Cup where the Bears and Surrey will face each other again on Wednesday July 30, at Edgbaston Community Sports Ground.

Surrey (women) v Birmingham Bears (women) (match 53 – league one stand alone fixture) London (South) at The Kia Oval (Kennington) on Friday 18 July 2025 (18h30 with floodlights)

Friday Finale became a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the competition’s semi-finals – albeit that third-placed Bears women would need to beat The Blaze who stand-in-the-way of playing Surrey women in the final. Crucial 24-ball ‘fifty’ innings by Surrey’s keeper Kira Chathli [65runs(from31 balls)] included five ’sixes,’ compared to Bears collective total of three ’sixes;’ until caught by Laura Harris. Separately, it did not go unnoticed that neither ‘guest Australian – both from Brisbane Heat’ Harris sister got to bowl (i.e.: Bear’s Laura or Surrey’s Grace.) Post-match, top-scorer Kira Chathli – pictured lauded POTM Alice Monaghan [24(18) & 2/32)] for her positive attitude and was thankful for her high standard when fielding –  taking two ‘brilliant diving’ catches, that reporters felt ‘balanced out’ the two catches ‘that (Surrey women) put down.’ Commentary: Cameron ‘Cam’ Ponsonby (Sports journalist) with Katya Whitney (Wisden publishers) and guest player Kirstie White (Invincibles women.) Also with Sam ‘K’ (pitch-side.)

Surrey (women) vs Somerset (women) (match 49  – league one ’double-header’ fixture) at the Kia Oval on Sunday, 13 July 2025 (14h30)

Having set Somerset women their highest score of the tournament to win, Surrey women clinched their tenth win (versus Somerset’s solitary win) from twelve matches played-to-date. Undefeated top-scorer Alice Monaghan [57*not out(from 32 balls)] struck four ‘sixes’ and three ‘fours’ toward her maiden t20 half-century. Partnered by ‘in-form’ Emma Jones (who hit run-a-ball 34) the pair banked 85 for Surrey women’s fifth wicket: recovering well from a poor start on 68/4. Bowlers Erin Vukusic and Chloe Skelton each took a pair of wickets for the visitors. Beefed-up by Dani Gibson (who’d returned following ‘stress fracture’ recoverry – please see below) Somerset women batters were impaired by the hosts who ‘put their bodies on the line’ to prevent boundaries; also taking two stunning catches. Best bowler was ‘leg-spinner’ Dani Gregory [who took a 4-fer: taking 4 wickets/conceding 13 runs)] as the visitors run-chase ‘fell away’ by a ‘wide-margin.’ Both teams positions remain unchanged (at top and bottom of the qualification table.) Commentators included Cameron ‘Cam’ Ponsonby with Sam ‘K’ (pitch-side) and guest player Kirstie White (Invincibles.) Weather was ‘scorching hot’ 27C.

The Blaze (women) vs Surrey (women) (match 45 league one) – ‘double-header’ fixture at Trent Bridge on Friday, 11 July 2025

Top-of-table Surrey women ‘clinched their place’ at the competition’s inaugural finals day, with level-scores for most of the match (as noted below) but leaving The Blaze ‘eleven short’ of their ‘meagre’ target score. Described as an ‘extraordinary victory,’ Alice Davidson-Richards – pictured [27 runs (from 23 balls)] opened, making Surrey women’s top-score. Kathryn Bryce [53*not out(55)] replied with top-score exploiting fast outfield. Earlier, three Surrey wickets fell to Sarah Glenn’s leg-spin during their fifteenth over. That may have been cancelled-out by five dropped catches, one of which came from Surrey’s final ball. Commentators added that The Blaze were ’short of boundaries,’ when compared to Surrey women. Crucially, Phoebe Franklin held her nerve when bowling her ‘death’ over: that clinched Surrey’s ten-runs win. Separately, The Blaze are the only side to have beaten Surrey women (to date) during this season’s T20. Commentators were Sam Dalling (Sports journalist) with James Gray (Sports news correspondent.) Weather: sunny with cloudless sky 24C.

Birmingham Bears (women) vs Surrey (women) (match 41) at the Edgbaston Stadium on Wednesday 9 July 2025 (15h00)

Surrey women chalked-up a resounding win with ‘clinical’ fielding, to stay top-of-table and  remain on-track to book their place to qualify for the semi-finals. Bears women did well to recover from three dismissals during their power-play, only to be bowled out by Surrey, after Bears posted what was thought to be a ‘challenging score.’ Apart from fielding, a match-winning partnership between Surrey women batters Phoebe Franklin and Emma Jones turned out to mark the difference between the two teams. Post-match, Bears bowler Millie Taylor told Adam Bridge that Bears thought they put a ‘good total’ on the (score) board; adding that Bears bowlers came back ‘hard,’ as (they knew that) ‘every ball counted.’ Fresh from ‘England A’ matches, Emma Jones [46 runs (from 39 balls) made top-score. Commentators added that Emma Jones’ departure was a ‘huge wicket’ (for Bears) in the context of Surrey’s run-chase. Finally, continuing with Kalea Moore, Alice Davidson-Richards hit the winning ’three’ runs. Commentators: Georgie Heath (Women’s Cricket Chat podcast) with Melinda ‘Mel’ Farrell (Australian cricket journalist) and guest player Chloe Brewer. Also with Adam Bridge and Aaron Viles (Cricketfanaticsmag.com) for Bears TV. Weather ‘Hot and sunny’ 25C.
