Northern Superchargers vs London Spirit at Headingley (Leeds) on 13 August 2024;

Beefed-up as a ‘winner-takes-all’ match, commentators later confirmed that Superchargers were eliminated by their defeat on their home ground. Spirit as visitors ‘won in good style,’ thanks mainly to a decisive 71-run partnership between skipper Heather Knight and international player Deepti Sharma (India) who made 37*not out (from 32 balls) and when bowling, also took star-batter Annabel Sunderland’s key wicket. Receiving POTM ‘Meerkat match hero’ cap-and-medal from Eoin Morgan, Deepti Sharma (pictured) said she excelled in ‘challenging situations’ and became ‘used to’ (favourable playing) conditions. Commentators added that some uncertainty remains whether Spirit can ‘keep their hopes alive’ to qualify for the Eliminator stage, until other results are known. Commentators for SKY Sports, also via ‘YouTube’ social media (for explanatory text, please see below) were Nick ‘Knighty’ Knight, Lydia Greenway OBE & Nasser Hussain OBE, (all three broadcasters & former England internationals), with Eoin Morgan CBE (former England international), and Michael ‘Mike’ Atherton OBE (broadcaster, sports journalist  & former England international.) Manchester Originals vs Northern Superchargers at Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester on 11 August 2024

A ‘comprehensive win’ for the home side (Originals) who ‘took the game away’ from Roses Rivals (Superchargers) when Kathryn Bryce (pictured) took a ‘hat-trick’ from the last set-of-five balls. Record attendance for watching Women’s cricket at Old Trafford witnessed records tumble. Firstly, Beth Mooney posted the 2nd highest score in the Women’s Hundred’s four-year history Beth Mooney [99*not out (from 54 balls).] That beat her previous record (97*not out from 2022) by 2 runs; and  thus holds record-scores for 2nd and 3rd place. Secondly, Kathryn Bryce posted the 3rd hat-trick in the Women’s Hundred. Thirdly in doing so, Kathryn Bryce ‘finished the job’ by taking 5 wickets for 13 runs:- only the second occasion that any bowler had taken five wickets in the Women’s Hundred. Receiving POTM ‘Meerkat match hero’ cap-and-medal for making top-score by a wide margin, also when keeping wicket, for taking a ‘catch and stumping’ from Kathryn Bryce’s final set-of-five balls, Beth Mooney emphasised her main aim was to get Originals into a winning position as opposed to scoring her ‘ton.’ Summing-up, commentators lauded Beth Mooney for helping her team ‘to a great win,’ having seen a ‘glimpse’ of what she can do.

Separately, it may have escaped attention that earlier doubts whether Kathryn Bryce ‘could defend 20 runs from the final set-of-five’ were without foundation. Commentators had to eat their words less than ten minutes later, when Kathryn Bryce took a hat-trick (dismissing batters Alice Davidson-Richards, Kate Cross and Georgia Wareham): with four balls; conceding just two runs for a ‘tight finish’ to ’finish the job:’ Despite their comprehensive win, Originals are unable to qualify beyond the group stage; whereas Superchargers have a battle on their hands to stay in the competition. Introduced for SKY Sports by Melanie ‘Mel’ Jones (broadcaster & former Australian international) – gaffed once as ‘Nat’(Germanos who was elsewhere); with Michael ‘Mike’ Atherton OBE (broadcaster, sports journalist & former England international), Katherine Sciver-Brunt OBE (former England international.) Also with Nick ‘Knighty’ Knight (broadcaster & former England international) and Simon Doull (NZ broadcaster & former NZ international.) Weather was hot and sunny 22-25C.

*Originals’ innings: *skipper Sophie Ecclestone with international players  Beth Mooney & Kim Garth (Australia); & Laura Wolvaardt (Rep South Africa); *[Bess Heath keeping wicket for Superchargers]; *After 25 balls power-play 30/0; *Going down-wicket to the spinner, Laura Wolvaardt was stumped by Bess Heath, from Linsey Smith; *Midway after 50 balls, 62/1; *After 90 balls, Kathryn Bryce retired out ‘gracefully,’ replaced for the last ten balls by skipper Sophie Ecclestone who was run-out from the final ball; *Graceful retirement said to have happened only once before; *With 3 ’sixes’ and 14 ‘fours’ commentators cursed Beth Mooney’s ‘magnificent’ innings for ‘eyeing 100’ and falling short by one run, despite commentators desire for ‘a fair wind’; *Originals’ batting: Beth Mooney 99*not out (54), Laura Wolvaardt 26(20), Kathryn Bryce 13(21); *Superchargers’ bowling: Linsey Smith 1/32;

*Superchargers’ innings: skipper Hollie Armitage, with international players: Phoebe Litchfield, Annabel Sutherland & Georgia Wareham (all Australia); *[Beth Mooney keeping wicket for Originals, in place of Ellie Threlkeld]; *Davina Perrin was caught by at ‘mid-on’ by Kathryn Bryce from Kim Garth; *After 25 balls power-play 28/1 (vs 30/0); *With ‘pressure building’, Hollie Armitage was caught ‘behind square’ by Laura Wolvaardt from Kathryn Bryce; *Level-pegging at midway after 50 balls, 61/2 (vs62/1); *Phoebe Litchfield was bowled by Kim Garth, deceived by slower ball delivery via ‘back-of-hand’; *Bess Heath was caught by Danielle ‘Dani’ Gregory from Sophie Ecclestone; *Three wickets during Kathryn Bryce’s death set-of-five *Alice Davidson-Richards was caught by keeper Beth Mooney, from Kathryn Bryce; *Next ball, Kate Cross was was stumped by keeper Beth Mooney, from Kathryn Bryce; *Hat-trick (as mentioned above) when Georgia Wareham was caught at ‘deep-mid-wicket’ by Fi Morris, from Kathryn Bryce; *Superchargers’ batting: Phoebe Litchfield 45(29), Annabel Sutherland 26(21), Georgia Wareham 25(18); *Originals’ bowling: Kathryn Bryce 5/13, Kim Garth 2/17, Sophie Ecclestone 1/32

Match result: Manchester Originals 151/3 (1.5 runs-per-ball, from 100/100) beat Northern Superchargers 134/8 (1.3 runs-per-ball, target 152 from 100/100) by 17 runs

Welsh Fire vs Northern Superchargers at Cardiff (Sophia Gardens) on 8 August 2024

Two special SKY Sports features were aired during the rain delay, optimistically awaiting the moment when players might make their way to the pitch.

*First feature marked the first anniversary Fire’s skipper Tammy Beaumont’s (pictured) century [118 runs (from 61 balls)] played between Fire vs Rockets at Sophia Gardens during mid-August last year. Commentators added that Tammy Beaumont’s ‘first ton’ was an outstanding achievement in the Women’s Hundred, albeit in the relatively short history of this format. Please see fellow correspondent Bruce Perkins’s report @ http://4theloveofsport.co.uk/2024/08/08/laughter-and-tears-welsh-fire-v-northern-superchargers/

*Second feature publicised the ‘African Caribbean Engagement Programme’ (ACE Programme) Charity’s three-year’ Blaze Her Trail’ initiative that seeks to: identify, recruit and develop female athletic talent from African and Caribbean backgrounds, with the ultimate goal of producing professional cricketers who can bowl exceptionally fast (75mph +) with the potential to represent Team GB at the Olympics 2028 @url https://aceprogramme.com/blaze-her-trail/

No result. Match abandonded without a solitary ball bowled on account of rain. Points shared.

Birmingham Phoenix vs Northern Superchargers at  Birmingham (Edgbaston) on 6 August 2024

Superchargers openers found it ‘difficult to get started’ with commentators noting possibly the second lowest competition power play-score. Northern Superchargers vs Southern Brave at Leeds (Headingley) on 30 July 2024

North-South Derby that will be remembered for a remarkable last-ball tied-match, the first time such an event has happened (to-date.) Lauren Bell (pictured) received POTM ‘Meerkat match hero’ cap-and-medal for restricting Superchargers batters, taking most wickets [4-fer] (4/11.) When batting, Lauren Bell also chalked-up 10*not out at top strike-rate of two runs-per-ball. When bowling the final ‘death’ over that tied the match, Lauren Bell mentioned her ideal ball was the ‘straight yorker.’ Commentators mentioned that each team arrived at Headingley without any points, played a ‘tie’ that came down to the final ball; and departed happily, having shared one point each. Noted separately that 100 runs was by no means Brave’s lowest score, that was 73/10 when they played against Invincibles, winners of the first women’s final (2021.) Introduced by Nick ‘Knighty’ Knight (broadcaster & former England international) with Ebony Rainford Brent MBE (broadcaster & former England international – director Women’s cricket at Surrey); Natalie Germanos (broadcaster & actress from Rep. Northern Superchargers vs Trent Rockets at Headingley, Leeds; on 26 July 2024

Rockets Alana King (Australia) received POTM ‘Meerkat match hero’ cap-and-medal for taking two key wickets (Georgia Wareham & Bess Heath); and also took one catch. Bess Heath’s dismissal drew parallels with the late Shane Warne’s ‘ball-of-the-century’ (1993) – please see short video below. Alana King’s tally stands at 14 wickets from 16 matches (at time of writing.) During the match, Rockets were said to stay ‘well on top’ but as Superchargers lost more wickets they faced ‘real problems.’ Speaking to commentators post-match, top-scorer Nat Sciver-Brunt (pictured) [36*not out (from 34 balls)] was congratulated as winning skipper for Rockets’ ‘commendable performance.’ Separately, never before had SKY’s match outcome predictor given any team 100% total certainty to win, as happened when ‘strategic-time-out’ was taken. Introduced for SKY Sports Cricket by Nick ‘Knighty’ Knight (broadcaster & former England international), Lydia Greenway OBE (broadcaster & former England international), Simon Doull (NZ broadcaster & former NZ international), Alex Tudor (former England international) & Dinesh Karthik (former India international); later joined by Dominic Cork (Head Coach at Derbyshire Falcons & former England international.) Trent Rockets vs Northern Superchargers, Nottingham, at Trent Bridge on 9 August (11h30)

An astonishing match unfolded, where ‘Superchargers’ posted a defendable score that ‘Rockets’ openers made light work of chasing-down. Cruising home’ on 92/1 with 9 wickets in hand, ‘Rockets’ reportedly ‘threw the match away’ from (what should have been) their winning position. ‘Good’ spin-bowling from ‘Superchargers’ spinners took five ‘Rockets’ wickets from just 15 deliveries. ‘Scoreboard pressure’ left ‘Rockets’ 9 runs short. Receiving her POTM Meerkat Match Hero award for taking 3 wickets for 29 runs, bowling ‘off-breaks;’ Lucy Higham (pictured) also caught both ‘Rockets’ openers who made top-score. Lucy Higham was ‘pretty nervous’ to begin with, but was ‘proud’ for the girls. Winning skipper Hollie Armitage ‘couldn’t have asked for more’ from her spinners (at closure.) Introduced by Nick Knight, Charles Dagnall and Dominic Cork (ex-England) with Natalie Germanos (Rep. South Africa), & Kumar Sangakkara (ex-Sri Lanka skipper.) Guest commentator Stuart Broad (England Ashes series.) Match highlights courtesy of Sky Sports (please see below.) Weather at Trent Bridge had improved after recent rain. ‘Warm afternoon,’ but still cool for August.

Having said that ‘Superchargers’ ‘needed to get some discipline back,’ ‘commentator’s curse’ struck when three balls later, Harmanpreet Kaur 11(12) ’a quality batter who was dangerous’ was bowled by Linsey Smith: a ‘huge’ wicket. *Commentators became animated when after a change of ends, when Naomi Dattani 1(3) lost her middle-stump to Lucy Higham (3/29); with 28 runs needed from 9 balls remaining. *Katherine Sciver-Brunt 15*not out(6), showed spirited resistance, hitting ‘four’ & ’six’ from the last 2 balls, matching Bess Heath’s earlier knock, closing 9 runs short. *Rockets best batter was Bryony Smith 70(44), who hit top score. ‘Superchargers’’ best best bowler was Lucy Higham (3/29.)

Receiving her POTM Meerkat Match Hero I from Charles Dagnall for her match-winning ‘3-fer,’ Lucy Higham (3/29) said that was the first time she’d been awarded a cap-and-medal; adding that she’d been ‘pretty nervous,’ but felt ‘proud’ and was ‘chuffed-to-bits.’
