South East Stars vs Sunrisers at Leicester (Uptonsteel County Ground) on 21 September 2024

Billed as a ‘David vs Goliath’ contest, Stars have been beaten twice as this year’s runners-up at both 20 and 50 over tournaments. On the day, commentators commended skipper Grace Scrivens ‘for a sterling job,’ when winning their inaugural RHF trophy as ‘eternal regional champions,’ at the last opportunity before the domestic restructure of women’s cricket ahead of 2025. Sunrisers making a ‘brilliant start’ when batting and bowling. Earlier, when bowling, player-of-the-match POTM Kate Coppack (pictured) took a career-best 4-fer for Sunrisers (taking 4 wickets, conceding 27 runs.) Grace Scrivens’ partnership with top-scorer Cordelia Griffith who scored her 4th ‘fifty’ from the last five matches, placed Sunrisers in a match-winning position when rain-stopped-play.

Post-match presentations awarded player-of-the-year to Alice Davidson-Richards for scoring 650 runs with seven ‘fifties’ for Stars, averaging 46.4. Turning to social media, ECB announced a cumulative total of 12 million viewers watched women’s cricket on ‘YouTube’ channels, with at least 2 million people watching ‘livestream’ this season across all three formats of the game. Sunrisers had never before beaten Stars (facing 13 defeats – most recently during May & July); apart from last season’s pre-season game (April’23.) Commentators noted that Sunrisers performance this year has improved by winning more matches than for previous years. Interventions should not go unnoticed from ex Scots international Andy Tennant’s appointment as Sunrisers’ Head Coach and former Rep South Africa skipper Dane van Niekerk’s exemplary practical leadership. Commentators for ECB alternated between Michael McCann (Sports journalist) with guest player Sophie Luff (announced as Somerset women’s skipper 2025); and Sam Dalling (Sports journalist) with Fi Morris (formerly Lancashire Thunder); Weather was sunny, 15-20C.

Northern Diamonds vs South East Stars at Chester-le-Street Co Durham (Seat Unique Riverside) on 7 September 2024

Players knew they were pre-qualified to play in the up-coming semi-finals. By no means a ‘dress rehearsal’ for the final, the match turned out to be one-sided, played in ’spin-friendly’ conditions with a ‘green-looking’ pitch and ball-slowing outfield following recent rain. Batting first, Kira Chathli’s Stars comfortably exceeded the ground’s average score (180) by a wide-margin. Commentators’ expectations raised for ‘around 270’ emerged, soon after Alice Davidson-Richards made top-score with a run-a-ball 79 and Diamonds bowlers were without ‘a single maiden.’ By comparison, Diamonds lost early wickets and carried four wickets’ disadvantage between their power-play and mid-way. Stars’ pick-of-the-bowlers, were seamer Alexa Stonehouse – (pictured) who took a career-best 4-fer (taking four wickets); also with spinner Kalea Moore who took her second 3-fer this season. Beyond mid-way, Diamonds tail-enders fought a nightmare ‘rear-guard’ consolation to chalk-up three figures.

Commentators added that Diamonds were ‘going into their semi-final to host Sunrisers (at Headlingley) ‘on the back of a defeat.’ As winners and group-stage runners-up, Stars will host the second semi-final at Beckenham, at home to Vipers. Both matches played on 14 September. Commentators were Jonathan Doidge (referred to endearingly as ‘Doidgey’ for BBC radio Leeds, for Yorkshire CCC), with Paul Shaw (former England Women’s head coach & exThunder Coach.) Weather: initially wet, described by commentators as ‘mizzle,’ causing a delayed start because of poor visibility. Thereafter: grey cloud cover, light wind; cool 12C.

Central Sparks vs South East Stars at Birmingham (South-East) at Moseley Cricket Club, Shirley on 4 September 2024 (10h30)

Stars cemented their place in the semi-finals by beating a depleted Sparks side. Unusually, both sides were led by wicket-keepers who stepped-up as stand-in skippers. Stand-in skipper Kira Chathli (pictured) [80runs (from 78 balls)] made her third back-to-back fifty. Partnered by Alice Davidson-Richards 71(from 68) the pair added 127 runs, taking Stars past the 200-marker. By contrast, three Sparks batters scored 50’s. Firstly, Davina Perrin, followed by spirited resistance from Bethan Ellis and Chloe Brewer who both made career-best 50’s. Pivotal moment when Tilly Corteen-Coleman replaced Phoebe Franklin mid-over. Next over, Tilly Corteen-Coleman’s first ball saw Charis Pavely was ‘run-out’ after sweeping, setting-off late and diving fruitlessly. Keeper Kira Chathli re-directed the ball down-wicket and Tilly Corteen-Coleman nonchalantly broke the stumps. Thereafter, Sparks faced an escalating run-rate beyond two-runs-per-ball for the final two overs. Second-placed Stars have one group-stage match remaining (at time of writing); expected to play their semi-final at Beckenham. Weather was cool as elsewhere, 16-18C.

South East Stars vs Western Storm at Beckenham (The County Ground, Kent) on 31 August 2024 at 09h30

Playing on ‘one of best batting wickets in the country,’ Stars faced scoreboard pressure to win to qualify for the semi-finals. An astonishing match unfolded after Storm posted their second-highest score this season and Stars staged nothing short of a miraculous comeback. Scoring back-to-back ‘fifties’ and playing only her second match this season, Kira Chathli – pictured [86*not out(from 81 balls)] partnered by Ryana MacDonald-Gay chalked-up Stars’ record century sixth-wicket partnership; with Ryana MacDonald-Gay who hit the winning ’six’ to bring up her maiden ‘fifty.’ Both batters played career-best innings. Earlier, it looked like being a short match when both Storm openers were dismissed with only eight runs on-the-board. Tables were turned by a century third-wicket stand between skipper Sophie Luff partnered by Fran Wilson who each scored ‘fifties.’ Keeper-turned-batter Nat Wraith also scored ‘fifty.’  Early expectations for Stars power-hitters to make big scores were dashed when Bryony Smith was bowled by u-19 starlet Sophia Smale. Alice Davidson-Richards departed prematurely ’visibly furious with herself’ but Paige Scholfield scored 49, having recovered from last week’s leg injury. Leap-frogging Sunrisers into third-place behind Diamonds (who have a game-in-hand.) Commentators expected Stars to play their semi-final, returning to Beckenham on 14 September. South East Stars vs Lancashire Thunder at Beckenham (The County Ground, Kent) on 26 August 2024 at 10h30

North-South Derby leaving Thunder with more ‘work to do’ to qualify for a semi-final. By contrast, despite losing, Stars need to win at least half their remaining matches – by no means easy for either side, both missing key players. Batting first, Thunder’s 3rd wicket partnership between Seren Smale and Fi Morris (who both scored ‘fifties’) added 96 runs: that was later said by commentators to ‘change the momentum’ of the game. Fortunes differed beyond mid-way, by which point Thunder were 20 runs ahead with two wicket’s advantage over Stars. Thunder went on to score 250. Commentators expectations for either Bryony Smith or Alice Davidson-Richards to play a ‘special innings’ were dashed when Thunder’s Kate Cross despatched both batters with consecutive balls. Having faced Kate Cross’ hat-trick ball upon arrival, top-scorer Kira Chathli made ‘fifty’ to commentator’s astonishment for a batter who ’hadn’t played at all this season.’ Finally, a ‘bad’ situation became ‘worse’ when Thunder wrapped-up Stars’ innings somewhat prematurely. As mentioned below, four tail-enders’ wickets fell to Kate Cross who chalked-up her career-best 6-fer (taking 6/40.) Commentators were Jamie Reid & Michael McCann (Sports journalists.) Weather: glorious sunny day, 22-24C.

Thunder’s innings: skipper Ellie Threlkeld, with Kate Cross & Emma Lamb (England), Alice Clarke (u19s), Without Mahika Gaur; [*Kira Chathli keeping wicket for Stars] *After 10 overs Power-play 33/0; *Opening partnership of 53 ended with ‘pressure building, just as predicted’ (by commentator’s curse) when Alice Clarke was bowled by Kalea Moore; *Five balls later, encountering ’added pressure’ when Emma Lamb was bowled ‘top-of-middle’ (stump) by Ryana MacDonald-Gay; *After 25 overs (mid-way) 109/2;  *’Big wicket’ when Fi Morris who made ‘fifty,’ was caught ‘hard’ at ‘cover’ by Paige Scholfield, from Kalea Moore; *Attempting a ramp-shot ‘scoop’ Ellie Threlkeld was bowled, hitting low-down sending leg-stump bail flying, by Ryana MacDonald-Gay; *Three wickets fell during the same over; *Firstly, Naomi Dattani  was bowled ‘off-stump’ (to left-hander) with bails flying, by Ryana MacDonald-Gay; *Three balls later, Danielle Collins was ‘run-out’ by Ryana MacDonald-Gay from the non-striker’s end; *Thirdly, Seren Smale made a ‘dicey call’ from a ‘wide’ ball and was run-out by Phoebe Franklin for a ‘well-made’ 75;  *Finally, Kate Cross was ‘run-out’ by Alexa Stonehouse; *Thunder’s batting: Seren Smale 76(87), Fi Morris 54(56), Ellie Threlkeld 33(38), Emma Lamb 24(36), Alice Clarke 23(55), Naomi Dattani 14(13); Stars’ bowling: Ryana MacDonald-Gay 3/42, Kalea Moore 2/49;

*Stars’ innings: skipper Bryony Smith (England ‘A’) with Alice Davidson-Richards (England) Paige Scholfield (England ‘A’); Alexa Stonehouse (u19’s); Without Sophia Dunkley or Alice Capsey (both England); [Ellie Threlkeld keeping wicket for Thunder]; *Cursed by commentators for ‘batting for lengthy periods,’ Bryony Smith was caught at ‘extra cover’ by Alice Clarke from Kate Cross; *Next ball, Stars were ‘in a lot of trouble’ when Alice Davidson-Richards  was bowled from an inside-edge for a golden duck from Kate Cross; *After 10 overs Power-play 43/2 (vs 33/0); *’Leading a rebuild,’ Chloe Hill went aerial from a leading-edge, caught at ‘cover’ by Alice Clarke from Sophie Morris; *Kalea Moore was bowled ‘top of middle-and-leg’ (stump) by Naomi Dattani; *After 25 overs (mid-way) 88/4 vs 109/2); *Notably with the season’s highest strike-rate, Aylish Cranstone went ‘leg-before’ to Fi Morris; *Phoebe Franklin was caught by Kate Cross from Fi Morris; *Top-scorer Kira Chathli who made ‘fifty’ was caught ‘in-the-deep’ by Tara Norris ‘diving to her left,’ from Kate Cross; *Ryana MacDonald-Gay was caught at ‘deep-mid-wicket’ by Fi Morris from Kate Cross;  Batting at No.10 with discomfort, Paige Scholfield  ‘chipped’ a catch to Naomi Dattani, from Kate Cross; *’Final blow’ when Dani Gregory was bowled by a ball that ‘nipped-back’ for a third-ball duck, also from Kate Cross who closed with career-best figures; *Stars’ batting: Kira Chathli 54(74), Chloe Hill 18(49), Ryana MacDonald-Gay 13(23), Bryony Smith 12(11), Alexa Stonehouse 11*not out; Thunder’s bowling: Kate Cross 6/40, Fi Morris 2/17, Naomi Dattani 1/17, Sophie Morris 1/21;

*Match result: Lancashire Thunder 250/8 (@5 runs-per-over from 50/50 overs) beat South East Stars 130 (@3.5 r-p-o from 36.4/50 ov) by 120 runs

South East Stars vs Sunrisers Beckenham, at Kent County Ground on 14 July 2024 at 09h30

As forecast by a visiting groundsman, the ‘used’ wicket was well-suited to spinners, who took 15 of the 20 wickets that fell, with 8 batters from each side reaching double-figures. Commentators’ curse struck on 159/2, before Sunrisers’ Jodi Grewcock ended Stars’ ‘very impressive’ partnership worth 148 runs, between skipper Bryony Smith [84 runs (111 balls)] and Alice Davidson-Richards. That became not only Stars’ ‘record third-wicket’ partnership, but also the ‘third highest,’ in the competition’s history. Seventh-wicket cameo by Ryana Macdonald-Gay with Kalea Moore added what turned out to be a match-winning partnership of fifty runs in 38 balls. Sunrisers started well, with level-pegging by mid-way. Beyond beyond mid-way the required-run-rate escalated above one-run-per-ball before Sunrisers were bowled-out. Stars leapfrogged Sunrisers into third-place after ten rounds played-to-date.
