The Vitality Roses concluded their Cadbury Netball Series campaign in New Zealand with a 62-47 defeat to the Silver Ferns at the Claudelands Arena on 1 November.

The Silver Ferns lifted the Taini Jamison Trophy at the end of the three-test encounter following two previous 58-45 and 54-47 victories.

After three highly-competitive tests on their return to competitive action, Head Coach Jess Thirlby will be able to take plenty of positives from the test series against the world champions.

Thirlby and Assistant Coach Kat Ratnapala were without centurion Serena Guthrie after she sustained an ankle injury in the previous game, so Gabby Marshall took her place in centre at the start.

The Silver Ferns started with all the intensity that Head Coach Noeline Taurua was asking for in the opening stages of this final encounter, the 100th meeting between these two nations.

After Maia Wilson netted the opening goal, the hosts scored two more to put the score at 3-0 after the two-minute mark.

The Vitality Roses, however, have continued to improve ever since they arrived in New Zealand and shortly managed to cut the gap with three consecutive goals. Each came from George Fisher and levelled that match at 5-5.

It was end-to-end throughout the remaining seven minutes of the first quarter as each side battled for supremacy in Hamilton.

Despite impressive defensive play from Fran Williams and Razia Quashie inside the circle, it was those in a black dress that narrowly saw out the first 15 minutes ahead. Wilson netted the final goal of the quarter and put her side 12-10 in front.

England were determined to not come away from their trip to New Zealand without a win and quickly levelled the tie after the restart, scoring three on the bounce through Fisher and Sophie Drakeford-Lewis.

From that moment on, though, the Silver Ferns took the ascendancy with shooters Wilson and Ekenasio firing on all cylinders prior to the half-time whistle.

Changes were made from Thirlby and Ratnapala, with Eleanor Cardwell and Yasmin Parsons coming on, but they couldn’t stop the home side from taking a four-goal lead after 22 minutes.

England battled hard and caused problems for their opposition but it was New Zealand that went into half-time in the lead. The hosts led 26-19 at the break.

In the last encounter, Taurua’s side won the game due to their emphatic third-quarter performance and were on fire after half-time once again in such a crucial period of the match.

Five minutes into the quarter, the hosts had scored 10 goals and restricted their opponents to just two in arguably their most clinical period of the series so far.

Vicki Oyesola was brought on for Williams, though, and made a positive impact by getting tighter to the shooters alongside Quashie in the circle.

The Vitality Roses retained their footing in the fixture and then some as they took the game to New Zealand, scoring eight goals and letting in just two goals. This included six goals in a row for the visitors with Cardwell scoring five.

The hosts were determined to leave nothing to chance in quarter four and, with their lead being cut to eight, they extended it to 10 right before the third quarter concluded. 45-35 with 15 minutes to go.

It will be those impressive, dominant spells that England will be able to take from the three matches in Hamilton. It became evident early on in the final quarter, though, that it would be New Zealand taking another win.

Quashie has impressed heavily during the series but could do nothing to quash the shooting duo of Wilson and captain Ekenasio, a combination which was left effectively unchanged by the coaching team over the last five days.

They put up shot percentages of over 94 per cent each as their side put further distance between them and their young opponents, opening up a 15-goal lead. This advantage was never relinquished as they ended the final game 62-47 winners.

Vitality Roses Starting VII: Razia Quashie, Fran Williams, Jade Clarke, Gabby Marshall, Laura Malcolm, Sophie Drakeford-Lewis, George Fisher.

New Zealand Silver Ferns Starting VII: Kelly Jury, Jane Watson, Karin Burger, Claire Kersten, Gina Crampton, Ameliaranne Ekenasio, Maia Wilson.

The Vitality Roses; England’s elite netball team, fell to a narrow 54-47 defeat after an improved performance against New Zealand Silver Ferns in the second match of the Cadbury Netball Series.

The result means it will be New Zealand lifting the Taini Jamison Trophy on Sunday morning as the three match test draws to an end, following their 58-45 victory on Wednesday.

Shannon Saunders got the game underway once again for the hosts, who were still reeling from a convincing win in the opening fixture, and they scored the first goal of the game.

The Vitality Roses came out more determined after their last defeat and were quick to respond to going behind. After drawing level, great defensive pressure meant Razia Quashie would win the ball back from a Silver Ferns centre pass.

The ball was worked expertly up to Eleanor Cardwell who calmly put her side ahead for the first time in the series. The Manchester Thunder shooter impressed in the first game and shortly put England 1-3 up.

After great work from the likes of young goal attack Sophie Drakeford-Lewis, the away side pushed the world champions all the way in the first quarter but they started to creep back into the game.

After levelling with a few minutes left to go before the first interval, the Silver Ferns snuck ahead by two goals to make it 14-12 after the opening 15 minutes of this fixture.

Head Coach Jess Thirlby and assistant Kat Ratnapala, who has taken on additional coaching responsibilities due to Thirlby being unable to travel for the series following a positive COVID-19 test result, made changes at the break by bringing the likes of George Fisher and Vicki Oyesola into the game. These quickly proved dividends as the Vitality Roses pulled level.

On a number of occasions in the second quarter, the team in red proved too hot to handle. Fisher was shooting at 100%, Malcolm was firing again and on two occasions they scored three in a row.

After drawing level at 17-17, Thirlby’s side put distance between themselves and the opposition. With three minutes to go, they were three up as the Silver Ferns struggled to find any rhythm on court.

On her 100th appearance for her country, co-captain Serena Guthrie fed Fisher who turned to sink in the final goal of an impressive half for England. After 30 minutes, they led by 23-25.

Silver Ferns Head Coach Noeline Taurua was critical of her side after their first win of the series on Wednesday and her half-time team talk clearly had an effect on the seven that returned to court.

It was a vastly different performance from the hosts when play resumed. An intercept seconds after the restart set the tone for quarter three and New Zealand quickly went back in front. At the other end, they limited their English counterparts to just one goal in five minutes.

A few tactical changes from the aforementioned Taurua and an injury to Guthrie meant it was difficult for the English to reduce the deficit. The Silver Ferns scored 16, conceded just eight and led by six going into the final 15.

With the Taini Jamison Trophy slipping away, the Vitality Roses continued to fight in the fourth quarter. The away team picked themselves up after an exceptional third quarter for the Silver Ferns.

They pushed their opposition all the way in the final 15. The hosts won the fourth quarter 15-14 to see out a seven goal victory overall in the game, a six-goal improvement on the first game for England.

The win sealed the series for New Zealand who will be lifting the trophy in the third and final game at the Claudelands Arena on Sunday 1 November, which will be aired live by Sky Sports.

Head Coach of the Vitality Roses, Jess Thirlby has revealed the names of 16 players who will travel with her to New Zealand to face the Silver Ferns this October.

The England side are set to fly to New Zealand on 8 October, after which the team will quarantine for two weeks before facing the world champions on 28 October, 30 October and 1 November.

The Vitality Roses, who are currently placed third in the world, will be fighting for the Taini Jamison Trophy in the three-day Cadbury Netball Series.

The full squad selected for the series is as follows:

Razia Quashie GK, GD 12
Vicki Oyesola GD, WD 4
Jodie Gibson GD, WD 25
Halimat Adio GD, GK, WD 3

Commenting on the squad, Head Coach Jess Thirlby said: “I am delighted to reveal the names of the 16 players who will be heading to New Zealand with me, this is a massively important opportunity for the team after what has been an extremely difficult period for all.

“After both the Vitality Netball Superleague and the international season were disrupted due to COVID-19, we weren’t sure whether we were going to get an opportunity like this in 2020. However, even despite not knowing whether this test series was going to go ahead, I am so proud of how well the Vitality Roses athletes and staff have handled training in a different environment and of how they have come together in uncertain times. I know they’re all excited to get out there now and to get playing.

“As you’ll see we’ve got a great pool of talent heading out to face the Silver Ferns, including some rising stars like Imogen Allison who is yet to gain her first senior cap, plus some household names such as Serena Guthrie who could achieve her 100th cap during the series and Jade Clarke who is the most capped England player. This is a great opportunity to blood some new talent in the lead up to a home Commonwealth Games and for them to play alongside a number of Roses who have plenty of experience facing the Silver Ferns.

“It’ll be an unmissable series and we’re looking forward to getting there now. In the meantime, we will be busy behind the scenes ensuring every safety protocol is in place to keep all involved protected. We’re very thankful for New Zealand’s ongoing support in this process and for them hosting us. We can’t wait to represent the Netball Family and hope everyone will be tuning in to watch. It can’t be underestimated what an achievement it is for both nations to enable this opportunity to happen, not only for both nations but for the visibility of international netball and female sport during such challenging times.”

None of the Vitality Roses who currently play in the Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) league in Australia, including the likes of Helen Housby and Natalie Haythornthwaite, will be partaking in the series after an intense SSN season where they have had to endure not only a grueling schedule of two games per week but also the need to have to live in a quarantine ‘hub’ for an extended period of time due to COVID-19.

Thirlby added: “In this series we will be without a few of the Roses that have been busy over the last few months playing in the SSN league, which started late due to the pandemic. Whilst we’ll miss having them with us, it’s important that they get the opportunity to rest and refresh both mentally and physically after an intense season both on and off the court, but we look forward to seeing them all back in the red dress again soon and are extremely proud of what they’ve all achieved throughout the SSN season.”

The leadership structure for the squad is yet to be announced, however Thirlby is set to name the captaincy for the series in the lead up to the tour.

To keep up to date with all of the news regarding the series follow England Netball on social media. All of the games will be broadcast live by Sky Sports with exact timings to be announced in due course.

The Vitality Roses, who have been following the Government’s elite return to training roadmap, will fly to New Zealand on 8 October and be required to quarantine for two weeks prior to the competition.

Vitality Roses Head Coach, Jess Thirlby, said: “We are extremely excited about the prospect of a series with the Silver Ferns. This will be the first time the Vitality Roses have played together since January, which feels like a distant memory now.

“None of us could have been prepared for the impact COVID-19 would cause, it has meant the international calendar has been affected and the Roses have had to adapt to a new way of training for a while. However, as a team they have pulled together through these difficult times and I’m pleased that they will now have a chance to get some more international exposure after an unsettling year and as we build towards a home Commonwealth Games. I’m incredibly proud of the team and staff for coming together with the support of England Netball during these unusual times.

“We’re aware things are still extremely uncertain across the world due to the pandemic and we have been taking every precaution to keep our players and coaching staff safe, which we will continue to do as we head out to and return from New Zealand. I know it hasn’t been an easy season for the English but this series truly marks the start of the next four-year cycle for both countries towards the next World Cup. This series will be great for the game of netball.

“Our preparation begins in earnest which will make the Cadbury Netball Series a key event in building towards the series against England.”

The England Roses produced a scintillating final quarter fight back before defeating New Zealand 64-57 in a phenomenal extra-time finish at the Copper Box Arena this evening.

With nearly 6,000 fans crammed into the arena for the Vitality Netball International Series, as part of the Netball Quad Series clash, there was barely a spare seat to be had as the Roses edged a classic match which will go down as one of the finest in the year, and perhaps the decade.

Each team dominated different periods of play and it could be argued that neither side deserved to leave the court without the win.

England had a chance to seal the tie in normal time but a Kadeen Corbin effort agonisingly bounced out, although the clock ran down as the Silver Ferns attempted to steal the win for themselves in the dying seconds.

Rather than ruing a missed opportunity, the Roses hit back fiercely in two extra halves of seven minutes, with Corbin showing her mental strength by leading from the front.

A trio of turnovers, including one phenomenal leap from Player of the Match Serena Guthrie, allowed the hosts to pull clear and finally emerge victorious.

The match started at a ferocious pace with a number of turnover chances missed as the England defence forced mistakes from the visitors in the final third but the Roses attack were unable to capitalise.

With the sides locked at 4-4 early on, a pair of tips from Geva Mentor had the crowd roaring in support but again a mixture of poor passing and good New Zealand defence refused to let the hosts pull into a lead.

With England struggling in the shooting circle, Maria Folau took the opportunity to display her ruthless streak. Goals flew in from every angle as Folau and Bailey Mes produced a perfect shooting quarter to have the Ferns ahead 16-12.

The Roses were looking for a chink in the New Zealand armour and after a Sam Sinclair feed was fired in with too much pace, the team in red took their chance.

A wonderful drive from Helen Housby saw a move capped off by an equalling fine finish. In a flash, the scores were level at 22-22.

It was a complete reverse from the opening quarter as England went on the charge. Corbin was finding her range and proving to be an equal for Folau at the opposite end. At half-time the Roses lead by one, 29-28.

The ebb and flow of the match continued into Q3 with the visitors taking command. Errors from England were being routinely punished with Temalisi Fakahokotau in inspired form at the defensive end.

With the ball breaking down in the mid-court, the reigning Quad Series champions showed their class to move 43-37 ahead moving into the final fifteen minutes.

Changes were made for the final quarter with Beth Cobden coming into WD and Eboni Beckford-Chambers taking over at GD.

A renewed fight and vigour, inspired by an increasingly passionate home crowd, saw England close the gap.

With every goal for those in red, the Silver Ferns started to look more fragile. Guthrie and Chelsea Pitman were pulling the strings in the final third as Corbin and Housby pulled the Roses closer.

As the clock moved into the final three minutes, Housby demonstrated her defensive class with an athletic tip into the grateful hands of Beckford-Chambers. This allowed England to level and the crowd to burst into rapturous applause.

Another turnover created by Beckford-Chambers gave the Roses one last chance to win the game in normal time but it was not to be and instead a sensational extra-time performance was enough to seal a hard-fought success.

The Roses are next in action on Monday evening when they take on World Champions, the Australian Diamonds at the Copper Box. Centre-pass will be taken at 7:45pm.

Roses starting 7: GS – Corbin, GA – Housby, WA – Pitman, C – Guthrie, WD – Clarke, GD – Agbeze, GK – Mentor

Silver Ferns starting 7: GS – Mes, GA – Folau, WA – Kara, C – Sinclair, WD – Cullen, GD – Grant, GK – Fakahokotau

Team Bath Netball have continued their build-up to the 2018 Vitality Superleague season by testing themselves against international opposition preparing for this year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The Sitec-sponsored Blue & Gold entertained Wales at the Team Bath Arena on Saturday, winning 68-31, before facing netball powerhouses New Zealand at London’s Copper Box Arena on Thursday.

Both teams will contest the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April, while the Silver Ferns – currently ranked second in the world – are also facing England, Australia and South Africa in the Quad Series over the next ten days.

Team Bath Netball Head Coach Jess Thirlby said after the New Zealand game: “Pitting ourselves against the number two team in the world was such a great opportunity and provided us with the quality and intensity we needed as we look to fine-tune our performances with only three weeks to go until our opening match of the Superleague season.

“We got off to a really strong start against New Zealand and for the most part of the match competed really well. They are a top-quality international side who play with lots of flair and creativity in attack and put teams under pressure with their off-marking style of defence, so it was pleasing to see both our experienced players and youngsters apply themselves against that. For some this will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to relish.

“Anna [Stembridge] and I were really pleased with how the team took what they had learned in training and applied it in the match. Multiple combinations were able to produce more consistent performances across the six periods, giving us a lot to think about over the next few weeks. The quality and depth within this 2018 squad is so exciting and we know that will prove critical this season.

“We would like to thank New Zealand’s players and staff for the match and wish them and all the international teams the best of luck for the upcoming Quad series.”

New Zealand will start their Quad Series matches on Saturday (6pm) against an England squad featuring Team Bath duo Eboni Beckford-Chambers and Kadeen Corbin. That match is also at the Copper Box Arena, as is the meeting between England and Australia on Monday (7.45pm), before the Roses conclude the Series against South Africa in Johannesburg on Sunday, January 28 (12.30pm).

Focus will then shift back to the domestic scene, with Team Bath starting their 2018 Superleague season away to Team Northumbria on Saturday, February 10.

They have three home matches at the University of Bath Sports Training Village before the mid-season break for the Commonwealth Games – against Surrey Storm on February 23, UWS Sirens on March 2 and Manchester Thunder on March 9 (all start at 7.30pm).

Tickets are on sale now for those matches, as well as the six home games in the second half of the season – visit netball.teambath.com/fixtures to purchase or further details.

Team Bath Netball are sponsored by Sitec and supported by partners Mogers Drewett, Investigo and Netball South West. Centurion Chartered Financial Planners are supporting the team’s performance analysis capabilities, Viper 10 are their Sportswear Supplier and Skins provide the team with compression wear.

A valiant England display wasn’t enough to wrestle the Taini Jamison Trophy away from the Silver Ferns in Hamilton this morning.

England team huddle (Photo: Press Association)

It was a classic encounter with both sides locked together until the final 10 minutes, when a late New Zealand surge saw them take out a 62-55 victory and, with it, the Series.

Tracey Neville stuck with the same starting seven from Sunday’s stunning win.

The Roses got the decider underway with the first centre pass and moved the ball quickly through court but Jo Harten saw her effort bounce out.

The Silver Ferns capitalised with Maria Tutaia converting the turnover and then adding a second before Helen Housby got the Roses up and running.

Chelsea Pitman continued her fine form from the previous matches and linked up well with Harten. The mid-courter delivered a lovely disguised feed into Harten, who netted to bring the Roses back on level terms at 6-6, before the GS scored England’s third unanswered goal to put them ahead for the first time in the match.

The attacks were on top in the game and the Pitman-Harten combination was firing on all cylinders with some wonderful movement and passing.

Harten continued to impress with a beautiful long range effort before Stacey Francis flew in with a fine steal and England converted to add to their tally.

With five minutes of Q1 remaining, there was nothing to separate the two sides with the score at 11-all.

A couple of errors started to creep into play. Bailey Mes converted a New Zealand turnover before the Roses were loose in the final third, conceded possession and a Tutaia double put the hosts 16-13 up.

The Silver Ferns continued to punish some scrappy play from the Roses and took a four-goal lead at the end of the first 15.

Neville’s side came out fighting at the start of Q2 and made a strong start with Ama Agbeze pressuring the feed to force New Zealand long and Harten converting.

Bailey Mes displayed her athleticism with an almighty save to collect a rebound and fire the ball back into Tutaia while falling off court. The GS made no mistakes as the hosts pulled clear by five.

The Roses responded though with three unanswered goals from the imperious Harten and the experienced defensive unit of Francis, Ama Agbeze and Geva Mentor clicked into gear, creating turnover after turnover.

England were pumped up and enjoyed a run of five straight goals before the Silver Ferns replied with three of their own to retake the lead at 25-24.

Mentor was everywhere towards the end of the first half – another trademark tip to Pitman set the Roses transitioning through court and Housby applied the finish to hand England a slender 27-25 lead.

More defensive prowess, a quick-fire double from Harten and a goal from Housby capped off a sensational turnaround as the Roses moved ahead by four at the end of the first half.

The Silver Ferns flew out the traps at the start of the second half with three unanswered goals to cut the Roses’ lead to just one.

But Agbeze pounced on a loose ball in the New Zealand shooting circle with Harten completing the move after some fancy footwork.

The Roses continued to make their presence felt with excellent pressure but the Silver Ferns kept their composure to recycle the ball around the circle before Mes netted.

England led 37-35 midway through Q3 but New Zealand continued to peg the visitors back.

After a Housby effort bounced out and Harten was penalised for being out of court, the Silver Ferns went level from an incredible Mes take before going 40-39 up thanks to a cool finish from Tutaia.

There was free-flowing scoring with the match staying on centre pass as the quarter drew to a close but the hosts took advantage of an overcooked pass from Francis and went into Q4 with a 44-43 lead.

Neville opted for a couple of defensive changes at the start of the final 15 with Beth Cobden coming on at WD and Francis dropping back into GD.

It was goal-for-goal at the start of Q4 with Harten holding her nerve with a huge goal from distance before Tutaia kept the hosts on centre-pass.

A clever drive from Housby opened up space for Harten in the circle and she finished with aplomb to make it all square at 47-47.

The hosts moved ahead again though thanks to the classy Tutaia and Agbeze was reintroduced to thwart the threat posed by the GA.

Strong pressure from the Silver Ferns around the circle forced England to wait for the right opening but Harten pulled the deficit back to four at 56-52.

With five minutes left to play, the Roses kept battling to silence the home crowd.

As the tension mounted in Hamilton, the gap was down to just two when Housby held her nerve to net.

But the Silver Ferns accelerated away in the closing stages, sealing the Taini Jamison Trophy with a 62-55 win.

Although there was disappointment at the final whistle, there are undoubtedly plenty of positives for Neville’s side to take from the Series as their preparations for the 2018 Commonwealth Games intensify.

The England Roses put in a tremendous performance as they overcame world no.2s New Zealand Silver Ferns on home soil in Auckland to win their second Quad Series match 49-45.

England Head Coach Tracey Neville (Photo: Press Association)

A stellar final 15 minutes from the Roses secured only their fifth ever win over the Silver Ferns in 88 matches.

Tracey Neville opted to start with the seven players who were on court in the England Roses’ spirited second-half fightback against the Australian Diamonds.

The Roses got off to a strong start and showed good movement on court. Serena Guthrie picked out Kadeen Corbin who reached Helen Housby with a looped pass and she opened the scoring.

Corbin and Housby continued to combine well in the circle but were unlucky to see several efforts fail to drop in and didn’t often get a second bite of the cherry with Katrina Grant strong on the rebound.

The Silver Ferns were criticised for not getting enough ball in their Quad Series opener on Saturday but were certainly much improved in this area against the Roses.

Grant, who made three intercepts throughout the game, plucked the ball effortlessly out of the air to set the Silver Ferns on their way as their defensive pressure was rewarded.

The hosts had established a four-goal lead by the end of the first quarter but heads didn’t drop in the Roses team and they clawed their way back.

Housby found her rhythm and hit her stride in quarter two and three unanswered goals from her brought the Roses back to within one.

All seven players on court exuded intensity, commitment, determination, drive and passion.

They worked as a unit and when the ball was fed through to Corbin, she held her nerve to fire the Roses in front at 19-18.

There was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing between the two sides and the volume inside The Trusts Arena went up a notch as the Silver Ferns pulled away to lead 26-23 at half-time.

The hosts picked up where they left off at the end of quarter two and led by five until Corbin found her range to end the Silver Ferns’ goal-scoring run.

Midway through the quarter, Ama Agbeze was replaced by Eboni Beckford-Chambers at GD as the Roses trailed 32-30.

Guthrie was in the thick of the action, either picking up every second pass or driving through court to draw out a defender and open up room for Chelsea Pitman.

The C displayed great vision and delivery with an inch-perfect pass to Corbin to score from mid-range and level the match at 34-34.

With seconds left on the clock in quarter three and things all square at 36-36, Bailey Mes scored from under the post to hand the Silver Ferns a slender one-goal lead going into the final 15.

The Silver Ferns flew out the traps and built up a three-goal gap at 40-37 but the resilient Roses didn’t falter and kept plugging away to bring it back to 42-42 midway through the quarter.

As the clock ticked down and the tension mounted in Auckland, the nerves were starting to show with unforced errors from both sides.

But the Roses kept their cool and there was no looking back when a Geva Mentor tip disrupted the Silver Ferns’ attack and the ball was transitioned through court to Housby, who scored with aplomb.

Momentum was well and truly with Neville’s side in the final few minutes as Corbin capped a fantastic team effort with three unanswered goals.

Chelsea Pitman was named Player of the Match for the Roses after a hugely impressive performance at WA.

The Roses will now travel to Invercargill, where they’ll face the rapidly-improving South Africa Spar Proteas on Sunday in their final match of the Netball Quad Series.

Neville’s side will be determined to build on their impressive performance and end their competition on a high against the current world no.5s.

But they’ll certainly hope to avoid a repeat of the drama from the last time the two sides met – it took a first-ever extra-time in the Quad Series to separate the sides as the England Roses sealed a 60-55 victory.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will go head-to-head with Australia as the competition draws to a close.
